Figueres is the birthplace of Salvador Dali and home to the Dali Museum, one of the most-visited Spanish museums. Not surprisingly, it is the place for the lovers of fine art. Close to the border with France, this Catalan city offers great food, wine, and beaches. Figueres is just 15 minutes by car or 25 minutes by train from the beaches of Costa Brava. Not as touristy as Barcelona, the city offers a relaxing atmosphere, quiet cafes, an historic Old Town and square, and even a castle.

One of the most historic sites in Spain, Girona lies in northeast Catalonia, just 99 km (62 mi) from Barcelona. Founded by Romans, the city later was taken over by Moors and Franks before finally falling under the rule of Barcelona. Influenced by different cultures and religions, the city beckons visitors with beautiful architecture. The Old and New Town offer many opportunities to pleasurably get lost and observe local life and culture.

Within easy reach of both the Mediterranean and the Spanish borders, Perpignan blurs the line between French and Catalan cultures. The meandering, palm-dotted Old Town is anchored by a rust-coloured, Romanesque palace—a relic from when the city ruled the Kingdom of Mallorca.

The pristine white beaches of Tarifa are just as majestic as the 800-year-old castle that stands proudly in this southern Spanish town. Windsurfing or kitesurfing is an absolute must, and the sea sparkles with the promise of bustling marine life—perfect for enthusiastic scuba divers. At night, Tarifa itself sparkles with bars, nightclubs and tapas bars galore.

The Wawel Castle, Main Square, St. Mary's Church and Kazimierz District...Krakow, the city entered into the first list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, offers a wealth of history and architecture. A city for centuries appreciated for its cultural heritage has also become a European centre of gastronomic heritage. In 2019, the city of Kraków was granted the title of European Capital of Gastronomic Culture by the European Academy of Gastronomy. Krakow is the city living a full cultural life. Each year, the capital of Lesser Poland hosts nearly 100 festivals and other international-scale events.

If you want to step off a plane and be at a mega resort 15 minutes later, Jericoacoara probably isn’t for you. But if you want an unspoiled beach town, and don’t mind bouncing along rough dirt roads for an hour to get there, you might just think it’s paradise. Kitesurfing, windsurfing, Capoeira, and, of course, just lying on the beach are popular activities.
