    Amazing Palace
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit the Palace of the Popes three times - it is a fantastic building and site with a lot of history. As previous reviews mentioned, be aware that the information descriptions are only in French and that much of the original interior was destroyed, so it can be viewed as many empty rooms; however, the architecture is fantastic. The palace now provides a Histogram (iPad) that allows you to envision what the rooms looked like during the corresponding period. This is a great idea, when it works. Sadly, the technology is a bit clunky and carrying around an iPad is tiresome, but being able to visualize the rooms as they once were was interesting. I’d recommend integrating more of the background history onto the iPad as not being able to translate the history and background signs is disappointing. Do not pay the extra 5 Euro for the papal gardens. It is a rip off.
Hello, We are very happy that you had a good time at the Palais des Papes. We look forward to welcoming you back to the site. The Avignon Tourisme team.

    Two for one in Avignon
Avignon is not only known for its incomplete bridge and the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon". The location of the Catholic Church papal offices have not always been in Rome. In early times the location of the papal offices were contested. For a period of time (1305 to 1429) 9 popes resided and conducted their business from he Palais des Papes in Avignon. This site is worth a visit and it is preferable to get a guided tour to get a detailed overview of the site. Of course a visit to Avignon is not complete without a walk on the famous Pont d'Avignon which is a short walk from the Palais des Papes.

    Very interesting!
An enjoyable couple of hours spend in the papal palace. There is an interesting-looking 'augmented reality' your available delivered with the aid of tablets, but I opted to focus on what is simply physically present today. Worth a visit. If note, a previous reviewer that said there are no toilets is totally wrong and their review is misleading. There are bathrooms available at both the entrance and the exit!
Hello David, we're very pleased that you had a good time at the Palais des Papes. We look forward to welcoming you back to the site. The Avignon Tourisme team.

    Huge impressive castle.
Huge, rambling, massive, impressive monument to the greed and power of mediaeval popes and their supporters. The tablet-guide they provide in the ticket price is not easy to use and could contain more information but also provides good mock-ups of how the rooms might have looked 700 years ago. If you have mobility difficulties, the myriad staircases will be a problem for you.

Guided tour of the Palace and gardens
We really enjoyed our walk around this historic and beautiful building. We pre booked a guided tour online and had the benefit of an excellent English speaking guide ( Amelie) who made the tour clear and informative. I would recommend this as the cost is very little more than the entrance fee and the guide really helped our understanding of this large and complex site. The Palace is fascinating and reflects an important period in mediaeval Provence when the Pope moved here from Rome. The buildings are magnificent.
Hello, thank you for your comment. We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit to the Palais des Papes, and look forward to welcoming you back to Avignon :) The Avignon Tourisme team.

Pope’s Palace-Impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Pope’s Palace in Avignon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest medieval palace in Europe. We purchased timed combo tickets weeks in advance from the website for the Palace, Pope’s Gardens and the famous St. Benezet Bridge. The histopad was not my favorite way to tour the palace, and I personally would have appreciated a true audio guide since the signage in each room is only in French. Despite the iPad/tech clunkiness, I still believe the palace is worth seeing to understand its significance in the city’s history. I researched the palace before our visit, so I was prepared for the stark interior with no furnishings or decoration. The 17 euro tickets seemed a fair price for all three sites.

    Visit to Palace and Gardens
We’ll worth a visit to this sumptuous palace where the Popes lived for around 40 years. There is a tablet provided which provides images of what the rooms looked like at the time (around 14th century). We had booked in advance but there was not a long queue. If is a good idea to include the garde in the ticket. It is reasonably small but beautiful and there are deckchairs to have a rest and enjoy the garden

Makes you wonder who the popes were serving. The church, themselves, or the people
Magnificent museum as it has long ago ceased to bea a church building. I would suggest a guide as there are very few English language descriptions - they are all in french. Impressive architecture and very few pieces of furniture. Lots of steps, but worth the effort.

    A must visit
I always had a desire to visit Avignon The Papal palace actually is the heart of it. The building is very impressive from outside. However the tour inside is a bit complicated with the tablet you get at the entrance. Inside was very hot and not ventilated. The windows were closed, so I had to find all the time some fresh air. Besides it was very impressive.
Hello Mark, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We hope to see you again in Avignon. Have a good day, the Avignon Tourisme team.

We found the tour of Palais des Papes underwhelming
Avignon is best known for the enormous UNESCO-listed Palais des Papes (Popes' Palace), the seat of the Catholic papacy in the 14th century and residence of seven Popes from 1309 to 1377. It was the largest palace in the world and considered one of the most important buildings of its time. The opulence of the palace and fortress is a testimony to the wealth and power of Christendom during the Middle Ages. Next to the Palace, the Petis Palais museum is free and closed on Tuesdays. We found the tour of Palais des Papes underwhelming. All the furniture and paintings are gone so you see just empty rooms. Display descriptions are only in French. The iPad bland descriptions lack audio and presents little history or special antidotes to better understand the significance of this important site. During the busy season if you do plan to do the tour you can avoid long waits by booking tickets in advance.
