Rainy Sunday in Matera, we decide to visit the Olive Oil Museum, we call to book and in less than 20 minutes Severino welcomes us to introduce us to this "slice of life" as he defines it. Enchanting place, perfectly brought to light, where the past lives again in the guide's magnificent story. From the harvesting of the olives to the grinding with the lathe up to the manual pressing at the presses, in this mill where work was done 24 hours a day it seems like being catapulted into history. The recreated setting is truly magical. Once the visit is over, we go upstairs for a very special tasting and of course we can't leave without a few cans of oil. Well done Severino and I recommend everyone to stop here…

    precious experience
It was a very interesting experience. You can learn how people lived and made olive oil in the past by listening to the English audio guide while visiting historical sites. The owner also explained how they used the tools. At the end, we were able to taste the delicious olive oil. I think this is a unique museum that you won't find anywhere else. Grazie Signor Severino!

    Nice old olive oil museum
Really nice authentic museum, where we got a personal guided tour by a nice older gentleman. We were the only ones there, but nevertheless he took the time to show and tell us how the olive oil production took place in Matera. We were also allowed to turn around the mill. The tour ended with an olive oil tasting which was really delicious. The best recommendations from here

    Go ahead!
We loved this experience! The Guide, Seferino, was very friendly and warm. He explained to us in detail the whole process of making olive oil, and was very attentive to our questions. The tour lasted about 1 hour, and ended with a tasting of the olive oil he produces. We highly recommend this museum!

    Interesting experience
The gentleman showed us the underground crusher, made the visit interesting and suggestive. He told many curiosities about the history of Matera and how the oil was once produced. The visit ends with a glass of oil from our own production. Experience I would do again.

    It's worth it.
A small museum that shows how olive oil was produced at this location in the past. If you do not speak Italian, you will receive a tablet with English or German. The old boss won't walk you through any of them himself and will also let you taste oil. Friendly and welcoming. Was a nice addition to visit Matera.

A chance encounter led to a wonderful visit
The generous owner kindly opened the museum and gave us a personal tour when we arrived without a booking. Excellent English tour via iPad and his charming assistance. A great museum - very authentic and complete. We also enjoyed a taste of his oil. A wonderful experience indeed!

  • Museo Laboratorio della Civilta Contadina Hotels
A restored XVI century building with court located in via San Giovanni Vecchio 60 (Sasso Barisano) is the home of the 500 m2 large Museo Laboratorio della Civiltà Contadina (Museum-Workshop of the Peasant Culture). The exhibition rooms are dedicated to the ancient trades related to the work in the fields but also to all the other handicraft activities carried on in the ancient quarters of Matera: sieve-maker, tanner, shepherd, basket-maker, cavamonti, shoe-shiner, barber, cabinet-maker, mastro d'ascia, blacksmith, tailor, conciapiatti, potter, knife-grinder, saddler, coppersmith, cobbler, peasant, scalpellino. Also, various every-day tools are exposed: farm tools, equipment for storage and processing of wheat, weaving equipment. Other rooms are dedicated to daily-life places - such as the public wine cellar and the typical house - and themes related to the South-Italy history such as brigandage, childhood condition and water-harvesting. The Museo-Laboratorio aims to be a dynamic structure among the tourism products of Matera and a reference for the development of the culture of the past through exhibition and educational activities.

  • MUSMA Museum of Contemporary Sculpture Hotels
The MUSMA, internationally recognized for its unique cave exhibition spaces, is the most important museum entirely dedicated to sculpture in Italy. MUSMA occupies the spaces of the 17th Century Palazzo Pomarici and was inaugurated on October 14th, 2006. In ancient caves carved-out of limestone over time, there are works of art which tell the story of Italian and international sculpture from the late 1800s to today and seem to have found their “natural home”. The fullness and emptiness of sculpture appear extraordinarily complementary to the positive and negative spaces of the Sassi architecture. From the underground rooms, we pass into the noble palace, onto the first floor where the works are arranged in chronological order and are framed by elegant vaults and cornices.
