    Nice experience to see
Absolutely worth seeing. VERY well managed by helpful and trained staff. A voice guide explains the details and the girl indicates them with a light pointer so as not to miss any detail. It's interesting because it throws you directly into the recently abandoned habits of the inhabitants of the stones

    a piece of life
A truly interesting and instructive visit to discover the real daily life of the population who inhabited this cave until a few decades ago. A person who lived there told me about this reality and I must say that a visit here allows you to fully grasp the moments. The descriptions are beautiful and the few euros for admission are well deserved

Life as it was in the 1700s in Matera
Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario is a 20th century cave dwelling that is typically furnished to show you how people lived in these caves in the 18th century and provide an insight into life there. Families lived together with their animals and existed without running water, heat and had poor sanitation. Running water, sewers and electricity was not introduced until the 1950s and Matera was know as the “shame of Italy” as a result

    Typical cave with event
In the visit to the cave we came across an interesting event. An exhibition of sculptures in the cave environments. Congratulations to the owners, the artist Petruzzelli and the people who participated in the success of the event, including the mayor of Matera

    The house-cave how they lived…
….is the interesting part. Nicely explained with an audio guide you access with your smartphone through a QR code in multiple languages. It explains so many details how the family with the kids used to live in such narrow place. In the 50’s they were all told to leave and moved to other residential areas that had been built. Worthwile experience. With the ticket can access also another run where they keep the ice/snow which is also insightful. A third has a video show which is ok, not the highlight. And lastly a church-cave which gives an impression as well. We have to visited the other similar offerings, so cannot compare, but what we have seen here was quite good.

  • Cripta del Peccato Originale Hotels
The Crypt of the Original Sin, in Matera, is located inside a natural cave on the Murgia plateau, near the old Appian Way. Commonly known as “the Sistine Chapel of rupestrian art”, the Crypt was discovered in 1963 by a group of local youths, who noticed the splendid frescoes in what at the time, had become a shelter for sheep herds.Experts later dated the cycle of paintings back to the second half of the 8th century, with Late-Romanesque style and formal elements of Oriental inspiration, such as the Byzantine-style Triarchsand the profile of the Virgin Mary, majestically represented in the sumptuous clothes of the Byzantine empress, the Basilissa. The anonymous, humble artist – who was soon nicknamed the “Flower Painter” – depicted biblical figures in total freedom: God the Creator, Light and Darkness, Adam and Eve, the three Apostles John, Peter and Andrew, the Archangels and Mary. The paintings on the rough walls of the cave are different and unique in Matera’s iconographic context. The scenes are the fruit of the painter’s personal creativity and certainly speak of his freedom in translating complex depictions, and of a lively spontaneity in drawing images. The Crypt of Original Sin may only be visited by booking.
