Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
This museum is perhaps more for those who seek a deeper dive into the life of the ancient Mediterranean, but it has a lot more than coins to offer. First, the house is really cool (and centrally located) -- 19th century luxury built by Schliemann, the German entrepreneur who electrified Europe with his (disruptive) digs at Mycenae and Troy. But...
"Guard change every day 5 mins before the hour. Amazing spectacle!"
reviewed 6 days ago by Luis B
Tomb of the Uknown Soldier, outside of the Greek Congress, hosts the changing of the guard every day 5 minutes before the hour. This is most definitely worth seeing, especially at sunset. On Sundays, the full guard changes, accompanied by a band.
Few people realize the incredible symbolic significance of both the tomb and the men guarding it.
Seen the changing of the guard at syntagma square ,was beautifully performed and steeped in tradition ,36 degrees but the soldiers performed with typical military precision ,well worth waiting for ,on the hour every hour but get there handy for a good viewing spot
Ok, I love this place, but I have to say that I think it’s gone from 5 to 4 stars. I can’t put my finger on it but something seems to have changed. Still super yummy and a must visit when you are in Athens
The famous Syntagma square is located at Syntagma station with the Greek Parliament building above it. This is a large gathering space surrounded by many shops and restaurants. It is central to everything in Athens.
We had a great dinner in Makalo. The simplicity of the reastuarant is very attractive. Few people for service, but they were very organised. Especially the taste of beef schnitzel grilled with prosciutto and mozzarella was unforgettable, maybe I should try it on my own. I have never tasted before grilled schnitzel, much better than the fired one. The second...
Our hotel recommended this place stating it the best in Athens. The gelato is very good and is similar in quality to the gelato found in Italy. There were about two dozen flavors. Medium cup was €4.50 and the large (three scoops) was €5.
A fantastic view of Syntagma Square and the Acropolis.
The lavraki was fantastic as well as my wife's sun-dried tomato risotto.
They have a very good list of wines to choose from.
The dessert menu could use a little more variety but what we selected was delicious.
From making the reservation all the way to valet parking the service was...
Our family recently stayed 4 nights at the Met 34. The location is superb. Staff are great and very helpful . The maids in particular did a terrific job serving us breakfast and keeping thing clean.
We are a family of 6 and our 4 kids are all under 12. The hotel is a great set up for families. We...
Excellent hotel. Small rooms, but clean and modern with very comfortable beds and a great shower. Hotel staff all very friendly with great suggestions for nearby restaurants. In a terrific location, 2 blocks from the action. Breakfast was a highlight of staying here with various options at the buffet as well as made-to-order items. This will be our go-to hotel...
"One of the top hotels in the world in my opinion - 30 year travel agent review"

I've been a travel agent for over 30 years and have stayed at some of the worlds finest hotels. Recently, I had the pleasure of staying here and cannot say enough good things about the hotel and the staff. When planning a visit, be sure to make dinner reservations in advance at their GB Rooftop restaurant (email GrandeBretagne.Restaurants@luxurycollection.com) and ask...
Lovely stay in a great area in Athens! Super helpful staff, breakfast was delicious and location of hotel was perfect! I was worried that I would be too far from the action, but not the case at all - short walk to an underground location, a 15 minute walk to the Acropolis, cab stop right around the corner and located...
I spent two nights at this lovely hotel. The room size was adequate and faced onto the back courtyard. The Tudor restaurant was the highlight. The staff were so accommodating. The view of the Acropolis is simply beautiful.
The hotel is close to everything and perfectly situated.
