Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.
"better come to this museum before going to Acropolis"
reviewed yesterday by Paulo Z
this museum is right in front of Acropolis and really worth a visit and Id recommend coming here first as at this museum you will see lots of original statues and pieces of marble as they were brought to this museum for better preservation and replicas were put at Acropolis so visitors can experience more of the attraction
"Almost tempted to say it is the best museum I have visited, but that is a huge claim"

Please note that the material exhibited changes and so I went expecting to see the Escher exhibit, but it was about Chinese technology developments. I was very surprised by the South facing cart that had an indicator that pointed South without the use of magnets. The staff were incredible as they gave demonstrations of printing and paper making. The water...
"Definitely worth visiting for making your night in Athens more magical"
reviewed 1 week ago by Sarka007
It was one of the most impressive moments in Athens - perfect place with amazing view to Acropolis, but still in the "dark mystical park" where you can feel the history. Dont forget to visit it during the night to see the Moon through their giant telescope! I dont have the words to subscribe - the shine and color of...
What a lovely and cozy place in the heart of Athens.
We had breakfast there twice and we loved every single minute we spent there. It's not the cheapest place in the world but the food is very good and the staff is really kind.
It is also a book shop but all the books are written in Greek.
I was with a friend for lunch and we were superbly welcoming with smile and attentive staff! On top of that we ate very well, it was excellent and very affordable ! I'm coming back, that's for sure !
I absolutely recommend this restaurant !!
Nice modern Greek food. Try the water buffalo, pig cheeks, and the sirloin steak. The tiramisu has just the right amount of sweetness. Capped off the meal with mastika and raki. Views are amazing as well
Located conveniently outside the Acropolis Metro exit, the quaint restaurant is situated in a row of other eateries. However, the food sets it apart from the rest! We've tried a couple of Mousakka from another restaurant before dining there and honestly, their Mousakka was the most outstanding. Special mention to the friendly staff there too!
Oh WOW, what a beautiful rooftop restaurant to enjoy on our last night in Athens. We went to the 9 till 11 sitting and the Acropolis was well lit up and in view. We got some great photos. The staff were very very polite and because I have a few food allergies they were very accommodating to my needs. All...
I took my wife out to Athens for her Birthday. She had never been to Greece before so the priority was seeing the sites.
Athens Gate Hotel is situated 5 mins most of the Archaeological sites. The closest being The Temple of Zeus and the Acropolis.
The Plaka is located 2 mins behind the hotel.
The rooms were basic but...
Our room had a balcony with an unobstructed view of the stunning Acropolis.
We were within easy walking distance of numerous restaurants and shopping. The Plaka is very lively and as a bonus the day we were there so was Prince Charles and Camilla - rather exciting for this Canadian gal!
The staff is very attentive and accommodating. Our dinner...
"Superb hotel in a great location with lovely staff"

The location of the hotel was perfect, we walked everywhere. The metro to the airport takes 40 mins with one easy change.
The roof top terrace for breakfast was very special.
The staff were the hotel's greatest asset-they were knowledgable, welcoming & genuine. Shout out to Angelos who gave us a great introduction during check-in, showed us all the places...
This little hotel is in a fabulous location right on the edge of The Plaka. We stayed in the roof top room, which was tiny, but with our own private terrace overlooking the Acropolis. We were given the option of moving if we didn't like the room, but why would you want to? The buffet Breakfast was fresh and good...
