While the space is beautiful, we were a little underwhelmed... had good food (steak special in particular!) but couldn’t believe the price of fondue!!!! I

Awesome little second storey restaurant with views of the slopes of Hirafu. Friendly attentive staff with coat check and good service. Fondue themed menu with good range. Good wine selection. Bookings essential.

We went to the Alpinist for a break from the Japanese food we had been eating all week. We had drinks and wonderful fondue. The meal was cosy and relaxing and the staff was very attentive. It is pricey but we enjoyed it very much.

Definitely recommend, especially if you’re craving some fine Western-style food. We had the raclette, and it was as authentic as what you’d find in the French/Swiss Alps. The crème brûlée was a little curdled, but yummy none-the-less. The chestnut dome, however, was deserving of being...in a five star restaurant!More

Visited the alpinist a couple of years ago and had a good fondue so pre booked ahead for a visit this year. I was very disappointed with the cheese fondue, almost oil like and with little flavour, the salad starter was so so, it's very...expensive for what it is. Couldn't wait to finish and get the bill, I won't be going back again, too many other great choices in niseko !More

We had a lovely meal here last night and it was exactly what we wanted it to be... a taste of France in Niseko. I’ve read some of the comments in other reviews, and will add my own here. We had the raclette with a...lovely Bordeaux wine. It was very similar in taste to ones we’ve had in the Alps, but with the bread and potatoes being more locally produced, I would regard this as a fusion of tastes rather than a 100% French experience. The staff were lovely - friendly and attentive, I’m sorry we didn’t get names, but you’ll know who was on duty on “mercredi soir”! Thank you for a lovely evening.More

This was beyond disappointing. Went in a group of 15 and had communication this would be ok. We arrived without prior notice that our table would eventually become two tables split across the restaurant. The food was dry, the portions were ridiculously undersized (see photos)....You’d get a better meal at the food trucks outside in the freezing cold. The duck tasted good and was a reasonably sized portion (only reason for the 2/5) The fish tasted ok - would have been nice to have 2 bites. $20 AUD / bite. The “clams” seemed more like smoked mussels from a can. Happy dining!More

Dear M. Turtle, Thank you for writing and sorry we didn't meet your expectations. We are aspiring to be one of the tastiest restaurants in Hirafu; the team is trained to face any quality mishappenings but it seems that you did not mention anything yesterday....More

The food was okay (nothing special either), the problem was the small portions. My partner and I ordered an entree and a main each and we were still hungry. I guess being so close to the slopes gives you a free stream of costumers, but...come on guys, make an effort!More

Great restaurant with friendly staff and delicious food. Although the restaurant does not have a very wide variety of food, the food they serve seems to fit everyone from vegetarians and vegans to meat lovers.

I wanted so much to eat French food like in the Alps. We got Foie Gras , Cheese Fondue and Raclette and it was all excellent. Dessert was also nice and our waiter recommended us a very good wine (Chateaneuf du Pape). Will definitely go...again.More

This is the 2nd time we booked at The Alpinist as we had a wonderful experience with the fondue and Raclette last year. Little did we know or were informed that there is a set menu for Christmas Eve dinner. Most disappointed not to have...anything even close to cheese - which is why we would come here in the first place. A few of us were vegetarian and the food was tasteless and without options. Also every course took ages to come and by the end of it we were tired and hungry and couldn’t even go anywhere else to eat. Very upset and sad to have had this experience - dampener on our last night in Niseko.....More

This is the place to go for fondue in Niseko. It is not cheap but is located at the bottom of grand hirafu. Be careful not to wear expensive jewlrey as people are know to lose items there after leaving (hot inside, cold outside). Suitable...for famlies. Book in advance.More
