Amazing experience and so magical. We went in winter and the setting is almost surreal. Set in a 150 year old farm house high in the mountains. Wonderful food...the parsnip soup was to die for. The squid ink risotto was sublime. Degustation menu that is...so reasonably priced. We caught the free shuttle from Niseko village to Hanzono and then the restaurant have a free pick up service from there to the hotel and back again. There is an art gallery attached as well so wander around and have a look. We went for lunch and i would definitely recommend this option. Warning: You need to book in advance. Everyone speaks English.More

This place is magical. We visited Somoza by appointment this winter for family dinner. It was a 2.5 hours full course fine dining. Superb food, presented artistically by the chef and team. Somoza is a marriage of art gallery with exclusive restaurant. The art collection...is amazing, coming from centuries ago. It is pricey but I think worth itMore

Quintessentially Japanese experience. Exquisite food, SO reasonably priced (5000 yen per head). We loved our lunch at this beautiful restaurant/gallery. The service was faultless, the food was the best I’ve eaten in 14 years Of coming to Japan. The outlook from the restaurant is stunning,...the photography and art are beautiful. This was such a surprise and we will definitely go back. It is a sophisticated venue and I would not recommend taking kids. The food is sublime but not kid friendly.More

Apart from the drive in a snow storm thinking you are lost in the middle of nowhere the place is amazing. Its a little hidden building which has a restaurant, gallery downstairs & a tea room upstairs. The lunch 7 course is just incredible, the...food is delicious, service was good, free wifi and awesome views.More

A joyful start to July in Japan with yet another serendipitous discovery of this gem nestled on a 150-year-old “Kominka” heirloom house hidden in the highlands. The moment I took the first step onto the hallowed timbre sanctuary, I entered a space that told a...million stories instantly - My eyes listened silently to the evergreen story of Nature with the lush splendour of Summer on full display like a panoramic painting. A walk through history in the gallery unveiled artefacts (and game) that hint of aboriginal Ainu heritage and culture. In the dining hall, Summer then makes its presence truly felt through myriad colours on artisanal ceramic creations, showcasing seasonal Hokkaido produce like wild-foraged Yama Udo and bamboo shoots, ocean-fresh squid, rainbow trout and Shiretoko volaille. My senses, stoked, calmed with a matcha meditation at the end of this encounter. One that I am bound to repeat as the seasons shift #一期一会More

Somoza is an art galler where you can eat. Or, rather, it’s an old Japanese timber building, moved to Niseko and lovingly restored and set in a stunning forest overlooking a creek. With a gallery. Where you can eat. This is by a wide margin...the most beautiful building in Niseko. Some would say the ONLY beautiful building in Niseko, but that would be churlish. Personally, I would come here even if they served microwaved pizza, for it’s such an amazing place, but the food is actually very very good indeed. Always seasonal, usually organic, and very tasty. It’s not even expensive (¥5000 for 3-course lunch). This is by far my favourite place in Niseko. It’s beautiful. You must go.More

Hello, Nils. Thank you so much for coming to Somoza last month. Landscape from Somoza windows changes dramatically through the seasons. It's nearly the best season to enjoy the meal at the terrace seat with the stunning view, sounds of the river and nice breeze....More

Amazing views, food, service and artwork. A wonderful experience all round, thanks to the knowledge of the friendly staff and as luck would have it our Aussie/ Melbourne waitress gave it that little extra. Thanks for the experience, well worth a visit.

Wow, this place is fantastic. We booked on-line in advance for 1pm lunch. We skied in the morning at Hirafu (with a backpack with our shoes) and then around 12:15 stopped at Hanazono 308. We put our ski boots and helmets in a locker (300yen)...and caught a taxi to Somoza (about 2km). Somoza is a lovely building in a gorgeous setting. The set menu provides delicious dishes all spectacularly presented. There’s an additional main course (1,500yen additional) and well worth having. The meal was one of the best we’ve had in Japan. Our bill, with a bottle of red wine was about 21,000yen and worth every cent. After lunch we chattted with the owner, viewed the gallery, and then caught a taxi back to Hanazono 308 and then the shuttle back to Upper Hirafu. It was a fantastic day combining skiing, wonderful food, and a glorious setting. Very highly recommended! Must do.More

One of the nicest meals I have experienced in 15 years of travel to Hokkaido. Lunch set menu was very reasonably priced, beautifully prepared and very tasty. A spectacular old farmhouse and great and attentive staff. Need to book as increasingly popular. Apparantly dinner is...great too, altho’ much more $$ . Near Hanazono , but need a carMore
