Visited this establishment this evening and found the welcome as warm as the open log fire. Staff were attentive and the menu was varied. They do not offer a children's menu but offered to adjust what was on the menu if our daughter did not fancy it. My wife and I had the steak sourced locally. Mine was rare and... More

The best choice of our weekend away, The huge open fires were roaring, smiling staff behind the bar were welcoming and the best of hand pulled ales were on offer. Food including specials at first seemed expensive but the the substantial portions, presentation and taste were outstanding so deserving of the price. Service was efficient and friendly and the whole... More

Once a year we spend a weekend with friends in the New Forest. We have been to the Rose and Thistle before and decided to return. We were not disappointed. The children were able to order sausages and mash from the lunchtime menu (there is no children's menu). My children had ordered burgers. I had the smoked salmon salad and... More

This is my local pub in the village, visited a number of times over the year. Great pub with a wide range of beers, lagers, and cider. The food is always to quality as is the service. It can get busy at the weekend in the evenings, a good idea to book a table sometimes. Highly recommended.

We spent a very pleasant evening at the Rose and Thistle. The cheese soufflé was to die for! Wow! The whole meal was all home cooked and very good, I'm still dreaming of that cheese soufflé! Staff pleasant. A lovely place to eat.

Visited for the first time for a Sunday Lunch. Had to book as gets very busy - although fully booked they managed to squeeze in a table for 2. Staff were friendly and service was very quick. Large portions and couldn't finish my main after a starter as well but dessert menu also looked lovely. Locally sourced produce which is... More

The waiting staff were very attentive. We didn't have to wait long for our orders to be taken, and the starters came quickly. Delicious. The mains too, all beautifully presented and yummy. Would recommend.

Busy with local drinkers but that just creates a great atmosphere for those eating. The food was fantastic pigeon, pheasant and pork amongst our choices..but so many things to pick means you just have to go back!

Description
The Rose and Thistle a beautiful 16th Century thatched pub is nestled in the picture postcard village of Rockbourne on the outskirts of the New Forest. Outside is a lovely cottage garden to while away sunny days and watch the world go by. Inside is the perfect place to spend any time of year with the traditional interior of beamed ceilings, carved wooden benches and cosy log fires in the winter. Colin Beck our head chef works with local suppliers to create a traditional menu sourced locally and seasonally where possible. Our beef and pork come from the New Forest and our game is from the village, with Manor farm pheasant, pigeon and rabbit together with venison from the local game keeper. Fish is delivered directly from the south coast and vegetables are from local suppliers. The menu changes regularly but always includes favourites such as our famous home made steak and kidney pudding and slow cooked pork belly along side seasonal specials. We also offer a good range of bar snacks and lighter meals including Welsh Rarebit, Sausage and Mash as well as The Rose and Thistle sandwiches including rare roast beef, smoked salmon with watercress and the famous RAT burger with smoked bacon, emmental and hand cut chips! The Rose and Thistle, built around 1580, was originally 3 cottages and became a bakers which then later started to retail liquor. The first listed landlord was Richard Pope in the early 1890's whose photo can still be found on the gentleman's toilet door. The pub has had several colourful landlords over the years one of whom is rumoured to still haunt the building. In the 1970's the place was made famous for its seafood by Pete and Pam Reid and people flocked from all around to taste the lobster. A consortium of villagers then purchased the pub who later sold to Tim Norfolk all who maintained the places great reputation for food over the last 20 years. Tim retired in June 2008 when Kerry arrived, taking the pub from strength to strength. In late 2014 Chris took over the reins, with his friendly attitude and fantastic team you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and delicious freshly prepared food.
