Had the best coffee here.. also if you can try visiting their production facility and have a cup of coffee there.
Have stopped here on every trip to San Juan LL. The coffee is outstanding, and the tour is excellent as well.
I love a great cup of coffee so when I found out upon arrival coffee is grown in the area I set out to find a tour. We were lucky enough to find the tour offered by the co-op La Voz that also runs a...great cafe in town. They offer an in depth tour of the full process of coffee making, all the way from planting to growing it, processing it and finally packaging it. The co-op is run by a bit more than a 100 local farmers and with no big corps in the way you are supporting local farmers that are growing coffee in a sustainable way with no pesticides but entirely organic. The tour ends with a wonderful coffee tasting and we learned everything about growing and making a great coffee. Highly recommended!!More
Although the scenery was beautiful and the experience was interesting, their English tour is essentially in Spanish. The guide was very friendly though and us both trying to speak in each other’s languages furthered the cultural experience. I would definitely recommend going here.
I've spent over a year total living around Lake Atitlán, and Cafe La Voz is my favorite place for coffee by far. The coffee is the best I've tasted and I'm completely addicted to the little cookies they sell for Q.1 (about 13 cents). They...also offer tea, a few alcoholic beverages, smoothies, snacks, and sandwiches. The ambiance is lovely, the cafe itself is decorated beautifully, and the people are always very friendly. The cafe also offers a wonderful coffee tour (in English and in Spanish) for Q.100 per person (about $12). You can take the tour solo or in a group. They only ask that you book a little in advance to make sure a guide is available. In addition to all of this, the cooperative is dedicated to maintaining sustainable farming practices and furthering community empowerment. I would highly recommend Cafe La Voz for anyone planning a trip to Lake Atitlán!More
Take a tuk tuk or hire a private car to take you to San Juan if you are in neighboring San Pedro. There are 2 tours--short version and long version. We did the long version which took about 2 hours. The tour was all in...Spanish but she spoke slowly. It would have been interesting even if I understood nothing. (I have very basic Spanish anyway, but others in my family translated more difficult words.) It is an easy loop walk into the areas where the cooperative farmers grown coffee and other plants. There is also a weaving cooperative here so you could arrange a weaving class is you wanted to. Tasted the differences in the coffees afterwards, including several roasting methods we don't get in the states. We visited in June--Guatemalan winter--so there were no beans being processed. This was good in June, but would be even more visually stimulating in winter when the harvest is happening. Afterwards walked to a local restaurant Alma de Colores which is run by special needs adults.More
After taking a tour of the coffee cooperative, I have an entirely new appreciation for the coffee that I drink. From the process of organic planting and cultivation, through to the harvesting and preparation of the beans - everything is so labor intensive! I will...savor my coffee as never before now that I have this knowledge.More
This was the highlight of our visit to San Juan and a favorite of our week on the Lake. One of the members of the coffee coop, Paula, gave us an impressive tour, including not only info about the processing of the beans but also...about the cooperative model itself. The democratic and consensus process makes the corporate model look like an oppressive dinosaur. The coop has helped San Juan become a model of harmony and cooperation, unlike some of the other pueblos locked in distrust. Paula models woman’s leadership. Be sure to tip her for the free tour. The coffee she treated us to was fabulous!More
This is a very interesting place. Senor Lucas Bizzaro, the son of one of the founders of the cooperative gave us a wonderful tour, with great details of how the coffee beans are harvested, processed and marketed. You could see the genuine passion he brings...into the cooperative. I highly recommend the tour and some time with Senor Lucas.More
Very interesting and informative tour provided by the locals who are involved with the co-operative. Outstanding value for 75Q (c.£7.50) each and you certainly get your moneys worth. The coffee included in the ticket price was excellent and I ended up buying coffee to take...home with me. In terms of getting there, my wife and I paid 10Q each for a tuktuk from San Pedro to get to the centre of San Juan and La Voz is a short walk from there. Thoroughly recommend doing the tour - one of the highlights of my trip so far.More
We ended up going to La Voz on a personal tour in San Juan. The tour guide actually walked us through the coffee farm and then through the process of making the coffee. It was very educational. We then stopped at the cafe and had...some of their fresh coffee. So good. Ended up buying a few bags to return back to the states. Worth the time to visit.More
Excellent choice of drinks, I had an iced mint chocolate which was fantastic. All the drinks we were served were of great quality and fair pricing. Although we didn't tour we did have the coffee manufacturing process explained and we bought ground coffee. The proprietor...and staff were very friendly and helpful.More
The women of this society seem to be the more creative. This place is filled with many of the typical (and beautiful) woven creations you would expect to find in Guatemala, including scarves, shawls, table runners, hair accessories, and so forth.
I had a private tour with a coffee importer who has had a long relationship with La Voz. This seems a wonderful place to assist the small coffee growers in the area..nearly all women and produces fabulous coffee. The processing of coffee by hand is...very interesting and the organization and offerings of the Cooperative are so spot on for this region. I was so heartened by the opening of the small maternal and child health clinic within the Cooperative. You will never feel the same about a "cuppa Joe"!!More
