This was a wonderful evening. We sat at a traditional lowered table - shoes off of course. We were treated to a lovely Japanese menu and complemented it with saki. This is not just a restaurant but a dining experience. The hosts are friendly and charming and some English is spoken - we had no problem communicating. After our meal... More

Kikko was one of the more memorable nights we had while dining in Japan. We visited during Cherry Blossom season in 2016 and I made sure that we had made a booking to ensure we didn't miss out. I was able to book our reservation by emailing the restaurant in advance before our trip. The restaurant provides seasonal menus, so... More

This traditional Japanese restaurant was a wonderful surprise. We had the 2 layer bento for lunch and really enjoyed the variety and taste. The service was warm and attentive. The entertainment started soon after 12 and what a treat it was !! The trio of shamisen players had a varied repertoire which included some traditional folk songs. Everyone was clapping... More

The warm welcome from proprietor Kodai set the tone for a delightful evening. The food was exemplary, set-off by the old-style traditional setting. We went for the eight course menu - simply delicious. Delicate cooking, preparation and presentation. To top it off, we were treated to a lively performance of shamisen guitar styles by Kodai and, I think, his son.... More

Lunch options were two bento sets (both very filling with a lot of variety), and all very fresh. owner was very friendly, chatting with us and asking us where we were from. during the traditional music performance, he also made an effort to translate some of the explanation to English so we could understand. he even did an impromptu performance... Excellent meal at this traditional restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere. Very welcoming host who spoke English and explained available 2 set meal options. Had the 3900 Yen set lunch and some hot sake, which I both highly recommend. I will treasure the memories of this charming restaurant.

Kikko was definitely worth the trek and did not disappoint in taste and freshness. The employee's were attentive and friendly. The food was authentic traditional Japanese style food and sushi. I highly recommend this experience to anyone traveling to Japan. The Menu rotates, but definitely go for their seasonal sliced raw fish! They have a great selection of Sake and... More

We found this quaint and charming restaurant by chance, walking down the street after visiting Sensoji Temple. They had bentos in two different sizes. We ordered the smaller size for 35,000 yen not knowing what we were getting. We sat comfortably on the floor with a pit for our legs under the table. The bento consisted of many small dishes.... Would go again, would recommend...Once we found it, the entire experience was amazing! The whole family took part in making our evening fun and filling. The small portions and multiple courses were a great way to try many different traditional foods. The music was spectacular, and definitely was a great way to wrap up exploring the shrines and city.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
