Nyala African Restaurant has been a centrepiece of Melbourne's multicultural dining scene for twenty plus years. Any business with such longevity, undeniably has been both successful and honest. The menu has dishes from various parts the continent; there is Nigerian, Ethiopian, Kenyan, Somalian and Namibian delicacies. The restaurant is located one floor up from the iconic Brunswick Street and is... More

Been there for lunch with my family. Great tasty rustic style food. We had several types of meat and all was great. Banana dessert and Ethiopian coffee were awesome too and all this at very reasonable price. Fully recommend.

We came here with friends as it was in the entertainment guide. Food was very tasty, we got a few dips, entrees and mains to share. The Doro Tibs (boneless chicken) and the Tafach Mooz (banana dessert) were my favorite dishes. Would definitely come here again. Great value, we spent about $25pp x 4 people after our entertainment guide discount... More

Met up with a group of friends last Sunday night, there were eight of us in the group. One couple had been there previously so we let them select the food based on what we would all like to eat. We started with bread and dips and moved onto a mixture of 8 different main courses. This included a variety... More

A relaxed evening, friendly staff, great house wines. The best thing was the combo starter and main options. As it was our first African meal together we were able to try lots of different flavours. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Would like to return with a big group.

I enjoyed a relaxed meal here with a friend on a Saturday early evening. The food was very tasty and reasonably priced. We went for the meat combo which is a great way to try a variety of the dishes. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Had dinner at Nyala last night and was reminded how great the food is. It is a very pleasant restaurant, good service, relaxed ambiance and I like the look of the place. It's upstairs and therefore a bit quieter. For the main course, we ordered the meat combination and a vegetarian combination and it was very enjoyable, Lots of flavours.... More

Staying in Fitzroy

Neighbourhood Profile
Fitzroy is an unusual blend of working class roots, hip gentrification, and a robust bohemian work ethic. Along Brunswick Street and its side streets, you'll find little independent shops where local clothes and furniture designers display their wares. There are specialist bookshops, funky record bars, and quality vintage clothing shops where browsing is the next best thing to buying. Gertrude Street is famous for its cuisine and art galleries, but if you want to buy an old-fashioned snooker table, there is a shop for that too. Small pubs still exist, tucked away on the corners of suburban side streets that serve up traditional Sunday roasts. Live music abounds, and the street performers play so hard you worry to tip them would ruin their concentration. Venture to the Spanish quarter on Johnston Street and you may even find street dancing. It is all happening amidst off-beat street murals and the shuffle of a very funky neighbourhood that embraces both old and new.
