Have visited this historic pub in the past and enjoyed good food and beer. On this visit, it was noticeable that some areas are looking tired, and there were many tables with uncollected glasses etc. The menu is good, although there was nothing on the specials board. We had a table reserved for 8pm, and ordered the first two courses... More

Hi Sunman239, I am the chef and remember exactly what had happened, as I was running the service on Friday evening. I would like to point out that we were showing the England vs Scotland game on Friday night in the public bar, so we were exceptionally busy, even more so than usual, and there would almost certainly been glasses... A superb range of beers. But what made my evening was the really excellent chili con carne. Superbly cooked, with just the right amont of spice. Apparently, the chef is South American.

We popped in on the off chance they had a table and were so glad we did. Nice burgers and lamb pie, decent portion sizes, friendly waitress and we didn't have a long wait for food. All in all a really good experience and I'll go back if I'm in the area again.

Service wasn't great we waited over half an hour for our dinner. I ordered drinks at the bar but wasn't told then that I had to order food at the bar, the waiter I asked didn't know. I had the small roast beef dinner adequate for me and my guest had the roast ham followed by two Chequers Mess. Unfortunately... More

A great friendly pub. My Local. great food, music, friendly staff. I recommend breakfast. A much better pub than the White Horse - and much cheaper.

The Chequers is an ancient building in the heart of the populat High Street. There are two main bars with a couple of nooks and crannies. The establishment has plenty of atmosphere with beams a-plenty. There is a good choice of real ale available, which is just a few pence below current market norm (which is far too high nationally!).... More

We stayed here for 2 nights to attend a local festival. We couldnt have asked for better service from the moment we walked in, everyone was so friendly, helpful and went the extra mile to help us with directions, storage of our bikes etc. Breakfast on both mornings definitley was one of the best we have had - good quality... We booked a table for four at short notice, not expecting the food to be so good. We were very impressed with the service and also the food was exceptionally good. Two of us had the "Large Tiger Prawns" as a starter, glad we only had 6 as the alternative 10 would have filled us up before the main course.... More

I like Steyning, but had never tried this pub. Popped in on a Sunday evening with a friend. Met with a wall of noise from a group of men chanting/shouting. (No football on the TV as an excuse/reason for this). We went into the snug with our drinks, but could still hear the noise. I think we were the only... More

This 'wall of noise' you refer to was due to the Golf Masters being shown, as you are correct, there was no football, this is the 'reason' We can only apologise for the 'noise' but we are the only pub in steyning to show live and exclusive sports. Our Snug does have a door that can be closed to ensure... More

I have reviewed this pub before but we stayed at the Springwells Hotel on Tuesday 5th April and dined at the Chequer Inn that evening around 7 pm. My wife had the excellent large Tiger Prawns (10) and I had the Cod and Chips - both dishes were well cooked and delicious. I tried all 5 of the beers on... More
