Vera poor dishes, whatever you order: pork or salmon or chicken. Prices from 1800 to 2800 yen, you have to order sides : rice or sweet potatoes, 600 yens each. Sure to be hungry leaving there. Plates are nice but there is not a lot...to eat. I only recommend the place for the toilet paper, so sweet! Nice international staff. The hotel and the bar located upstrairs and downstairs should be better.More

Wife ordered the mushroom hotpot as it sounded delicious on the menu. When it came it was massively chili-laden and she can't tolerate any heat. No mention of chili in the meal description. I gave her my dish, something with chicken and sweet potato which...was tiny. We mentioned the disappointment to the waitstaff and there was no offer of another meal. When we went to pay, there was no offer to remove it from our bill. So we both left there hungry and a big hole in the wallet. Disappointed and upset.More

Small hotel cafe. Awesome breakfast pre-ski. Eggs Benedict was not traditional - on sour dough toast with reg bacon (a lot of bacon) but who cares. It came out hot and delicious- eggs were perfectly poached. My husband had French toast - also very good....It was busy and the coffee came out slow but it was a minor glitch. Prices are comparable to other places in town. They serve lunch as well.More

This was the best meal we had during our stay in Japan this year. A little pricy and not huge portions but great food. The beef Short Rib and the Chicken Roulade dish we had were really top quality food and well presented. I hadn't...tried Plum wine before and was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was in Tanuki. Whilst the service is a little slow and chaotic, we can forgive that because the front of house staff are so friendly and apologised for the delay in serving drinks. Desserts were pretty good too! Overall we had a great experience at Tanuki.More

The beef rib dish was pricey, but so delicious! The croquettes were crumbed and fried perfectly, but were too mushy and lacked flavour. The "vegetables with miso and sesame" was disappointing, nowhere on the menu did it say the vegetables were going to be served...raw! The sweet potato with ponzu butter was a great side dish for the beef. The floor staff, while friendly, were completely disorganised! Don't think any of them had ever had any training in hospitality! They looked in our direction, but just didn't make eye contact. No one seemed to be in charge, and after waiting ages, we had to ask a waitress to pleeeeease take our order. Plenty of floor staff, but they just were not working as a team. For the prices this place was charging, I expected better service. Nice ambience in the restaurant. Would have got 4 stars if the service was better.More

We arrived at this restaurant with out a booking on the 1st night. We tried a few other places but we needed to have had a booking. To be honest we probably would not have tried this place if it had not been for not...having a booking and not getting in to other restaurant around, the reason being that it looks to be a fancy dining and overpriced. The food was fantastic, and yes a little overpriced but reasonable given the quality of food, and we had good service. They provided a high chair for our little one with out asking and provided a small cookie for our little one as well. They have a coffee/ barista set up at the front window so we will definitely try a coffee in the morning on the way to the snow!More

Stopped to have drinks and coffee earlier in the week in the main level restaurant after dinner elsewhere and service was great as were drinks. The plates of food and menu of the main restaurant all looked good (can’t comment on meal service as we...didn’t eat there). We booked the Teppanyaki restaurant upstairs for two nights later. Arrived early so again waited in main level restaurant for a drink and to wait for friends ..again service great..found a counter table for me and sorted drinks for me really quickly. Then moved upstairs to the Teppanyaki restaurant which seats around 10-12 people. I may have been spoilt going to fantastic quality authentic Japanese Teppanyaki restaurants on my Japan wide travels the previous week but this was not good quality Teppanyaki. Preparation and presentation is usually so precise and elegant ..which this unfortunately wasn’t. Food all still very edible but just not authentic Despite some of the comments from recent reviews, wish we had risked the main restaurant downstairs.More

We booked and arrived early as we had 6 adults and 6 young children. The menu was degustation and the courses were unsuitable for children. I enjoyed the flavours but could understand that the children did not like it. Also the courses arrived in the...centre of the table with not enough pieces of food. eg. for 6 people there were only 4 pieces of food which we had to divide up. I would suggest a different menu for children which we had at 2 other restaurants in Nozawa and this was very successful. Paying a high degustation price for food not eaten is not something that makes one feel happy.More

We came here for dinner on a Saturday night. Chasing gluten free meals, we appreciated the fact the menus catered for this. The menu is great and our food had interesting flavours even though the chefs had to miss out some of the ingredients. Although...the food is lovely, portions are small considering the price. We would really recommend the front of house staff be trained more effectively. With the style of restaurant and the price tag, we waited ages for our menus and there was clear confusion across the restaurant. We came back the next morning for coffee and again, were not impressed by the disinterest of the waitress. We waited a while to be acknowledged, then were told to order at the counter after we waited 5 minutes to be served at our table. My partner and I have both worked in hospitality before and felt like the service left a lot to be desired - especially when you’re paying a lot of money.More

We stopped in here for take away coffee most mornings during our 8 day stay. The coffee was good but 1/2 the size of a of a normal coffee at $5 Australian. The last morning we decided to skip our hotel breakfast and come to...Tanuki...... The staff were way to busy with only 2 people on the floor and were not very happy towards guest. Our meals came out and mine was cold, i wasn't going to say anything but my husband made me as we had paid AU$120 for a family of 4. I took it back to the chef who was super rude to me and aggressively threw it in the bin, he then came back out to our seats and said so i suppose you want another one? The chef was also super rude to the staff, dinging his bell furiously and yelling out across the restaurant. So disappointing, we were really looking forward to our last breakfast in this beautiful town.More

This is a fusion place. Go here if you want the western vibe. The good was tasty enough but disappointingly small portions for the price - eg the pork belly

Wonderful upscale dinner for nozawa! Excellent service and all meals were impeccable. A little more expensive but worth every penny. If you want cheap pub food this is not your place.

We visited Tanuki coffee shop multiple times during our stay in Nozawa-Onsen. Our experience was mixed. Overall quality of coffee is very good. Everything from specialty drip coffee with a choice of beans to more standard coffee selections. Standard western and Japanese breakfast options were...high quality. Unfortunately the service was severely lacking. Staff were not rude, but appeared over worked and unable to keep up with orders and customers. We were regularly left waiting a long time for wait staff to notice us and find us a seat. Once seated, staff were often too busy to bring us menus (it was table service) or take our order. Even take away coffees took over 25 minutes to arrive, and we waited 50 minutes for our meals after ordering. While the quality of the food convinced us to return a few times (and the lack of other options in the town) - eventually the poor service became too much.More

Tanuki’s coffee offerings are wide ranging and consistently high quality. I tried their espresso, as well as several of their batch brews. Everything was delicious and up to a high standard. Tanuki has the best coffee available in Nozawa. They also serve lovely breakfasts in...the mornings (ends around 10am) and small snacks like biscuits. The atmosphere is also really warm and inviting. Unfortunately, I also have to note that the service here is really strange. I visited several times, and each time I was unsure whether I should sit down or wait to be seated because the staff completely ignored me. Once shown to my seat, I wasn’t offered a drink or given a menu until I prompted the staff. On another occasion my breakfast order took 50 minutes. They are very busy and the staff are clearly trying their best, but if you need a quick coffee or bite to eat, I suggest going elsewhere.More
