About
Via Alba is still so in Canelli today as then, behind the houses the vineyard is heard, and among the lime trees the hill has the colour of white grapes. Today as then there is San Marco. In the times of Pavese it was an ancient "ostu" with stabling, which took its name from a nearby church. During the celebration of the Evangelist Saint the women of the countryside went on a pilgrimage to propitiate the hatching of the "bigat", the silkworms they carried in their chests. Today there is no longer the church, nor even the "bigat", but there is still San Marco, and the "Moscato air" that occasionally breathes among the lime trees. And we can find Mariuccia and Piercarlo, who with discretion and perseverance keep the great gastronomic culture of this domain alive, rejuvenating it with love when necessary, and in many cases rediscovering ancient traditions.

Ancient tavern with stables from the early twentieth century; this property since 1959 first as a tavern then as a restaurant and, from 1989 to 2019, a Michelin star. Street parking. Once through the entrance there is the lounge and the bar area; the L-shaped room has 30 seats, 15 in the wine rumpus room, 20 on the beautiful terrace. Chef Mariuccia Roggero; in the dining room her husband Piercarlo Ferrero, renowned trifulau, followed by Medhi, Ugo and Stanka, stool for the bag, wine spilled, all cutlery replaced at each course. Event as per title at €50 all inclusive and as described, we choose both versions; dinner:
Aperitif:
- Alta Langa DOCG Riserva "Due Bollicine" az. Beppe Marino.
White bread and maison tongues; artisanal breadsticks and focaccia.
Wine:
- Barbera d'Asti DOCG "Vespa" az. Cascina Marino Castlet.
The appetizers of San Marco:
- herb and mint omelettes
- gorgonzola crouton, walnuts and crunchy celery.
- Tropea onion cooked in salt with artisanal cotechino and fondue.
Bagna Cauda Day - Bagna Cauda Pax:
- Bagna Cauda "Atea" without garlic but not without flavour.
- the great Bagna Cauda of the Piedmontese tradition as "God commands".
Following:
- our agnolottini del plin in restricted fatty beef consommé.
Dessert:
- caramelized pineapple with Grand Marnier, "lemon and sage" sorbet.
Coffee and the small pastry shop to close:
- Soft nougat; meringues; bad and good; sanded hazelnuts.
The wine list features 600 labels. Two menus at €55 and €62; à la carte 4 starters from €18 to €22; 5 first courses from 16 to 18€; 6 seconds from 20 to 24€, "selection of cheeses" at 14€; 6 desserts for €12; everything can be consulted on the website. From our last visit we still have the memory of the tender Maltese Miguel. At the end of dinner our compliments.

The dishes, made according to tradition, denote care and passion, as well as offering the quality of the raw materials. The environment is refined and respect for the distances between the tables allows dialogue between diners. The family atmosphere that is perceived is pleasant and reassuring. The staff is polite, competent and friendly. Correct quality/price ratio.
We had lunch today choosing dishes from the à la carte menu, and for us it was the first time we had tried this renowned restaurant in Canelli.
Restaurant where we will certainly return

Dear already on the phone for the reservation, they reserve a table for us in a classic and clean room.
We opt for a 6-course tasting menu, traditional Piedmontese cuisine, carefully prepared and full of non-trivial options.
All the dishes inspire me, a rare event.
Absolutely try the honey-lacquered pork belly with spiced apples and dark Asti spring onion: that alone is worth the trip.
Exemplary hospitality and service, elegant but never intrusive, everything excellent from the appetizer to the coffee, something not to be taken for granted even in the most renowned restaurants.
More than honest account compared to the impeccable quality.
At the exit they present us with a quality local panettone and wish us happy holidays.
Difficult to ask for more.

The food is excellent, but the total experience is poor. The waiters are young and inexperienced, which lead to them selling us a wine paring consisting of only the wine they had by the glass which was frankly the worst I tasted in the region. As a compromise they asked us to buy a bottle instead which completely ruins the point of a wine paring.
I heard they lost their star and I do understand why.

During the week the place is quite empty, located among beautiful hills, the restaurant outside is not flashy and you can't find it when passing by, you have to get to know it and find it. Welcomed very well, the place is very refined in an elegant style, few seats and well-spaced tables. there is an à la carte menu and a tasting menu around 50 euros, with different courses in order to have a good knowledge of the cuisine. They showed us a wooden box with some very fresh and very beautiful freshly picked porcini mushrooms, it's a shame that it grossly highlighted the exaggerated purchase price, I didn't like it. We took a Boer Negri red and some water. Started with a cadeau from the chef, a vegetable tempera on raschera cream, well established. As an appetizer, a selection of mushrooms and courgettes with an egg in raschera cream, I must say refined and very good, then a presentation of Piedmontese appetizers, veal with tuna sauce, pepper with tuna, Fassona steak; very good but sad presentation, three small candies in a large dish, they seemed very sad and not very connected to each other. First we tried the egg tabarin with not bad meat sauce, then we asked for the lean ravioli with mushrooms and they mistakenly served me the plin ravioli, a big gaffe for a starred restaurant, but I understand that it could fit and I didn't have I asked them to redo the other first course to eat together and we waited for them to redo the chosen dish, in the end the ravioli was excellent, but it was already the third course with raschera cream that was served to me and it bored me a little, the mushrooms on the ravioli nothing special. Portions all small. Second course of lamb with Cristina on top, delicate, while the octopus was overcooked, it tasted burnt on the tips, I'm sorry because it would have been excellent, but the burnt taste put me off a bit in my mouth. Very clean place, the only flaw was a dog that occasionally passed near the tables, they shouldn't allow it even if it was cute, white and small, even the other tables looked at it with an amazed expression. Served free with the coffee killer for delicious little desserts and served with excellent presentation. Tried an exceptional Rovera di Torino white vermouth. In summary, refined location, good and very kind service, but regarding the food I expected something better. High price

Not the first time at the restaurant. Order 2 times the menu and 2 times à la carte. 2 bottles of wine. To the taglarini there is a total of about 8 - 8 grams of truffle. The quality is very good, even if the special a the food lacks. Service and friendliness perfect. At the end, the patron comes by and asks if we would like a glass of Moscato. I tend to fend off him, he comes by with two glasses and it's poured. Nice touch. The calculation is surprising and annoying. 80 euros paid for the truffles (in the morning directly from the truffle hunter) for 36 grams 80 euros and 10 euros each per glass. The whole thing is very unlikable

Booked with the Fork with attention to the prices displayed on the site and chosen for the offer of the Menu that usually corresponds to what is presented on site, we found ourselves paying 55 euros for a plate of tagliolini with white truffle when on the site
were indicated at 18 euros price that we emphasized was the summer, also a glass of Barbera di Nizza paid 10 euros for a wine whose bottle cost 25 seemed really excessive. Unfortunately, the price of a glass was not indicated on the wine list : 100 ml
To conclude a first course with truffle and a second based on “piglet” and two glasses of wine, two coffees 127 euros.
The next day in Acqui Terme the same amount of truffle paid half.
I'm really sorry, despite the sympathy of the room manager and the conviviality of the truffle hunter owner, to have to note that with a smile we were gabbato a full.

It is NO longer the place with 1 star from a few years ago!!!
Tavern quality with restaurant prices that no longer exist!!!
I took tagliolini with truffle, a sticky and whitish pasta, certainly not with 40 yolks as described in the menu, as a second fillet with truffle sauce and sautéed porcini mushrooms, a terrible dish, not good and presented even worse with an inedible greenish sauce as well as the mushrooms without any flavour... I only tasted a small piece of meat and sent the dish back untouched... no one asked me why and if I wanted anything else!!!
Dessert is the only dish that can be saved.... but paying 100 euros per person for such a treatment is NO!!!
Paid in cash without receipt!!!
I will NEVER go back there again!

A pleasant discovery! Small, chic place, with formal service! We took the 6-course tasting menu for €52, appetizer, tasting of 4 starters, first course, second course and dessert, coffee with small pastries... all excellent! The prices are absolutely appropriate for the venue and the menu presented! We will definitely be back

First visit to this historic restaurant in Canelli.
You can immediately notice the level of professionalism of the place from the mise en place, the staff and the furnishings. The cuisine is no exception, with offerings linked to the Monferrato tradition but not only that, all the dishes have a touch of personality.
The bill is proportionate to the quality of the restaurant.

Grazie

The San Marco in Canelli is the typical Langhe restaurant which, despite the large tourist influx, has remained rather authentic even in its simplicity. The dishes are typical of the region, well presented without too many flourishes but not too basic either. Not a very wide choice but they are flexible and meet the customer's needs. The cellar is excellent with a very good choice of quality wines by the glass.
Fair prices, perhaps even a little below average.
I will definitely come back

We stayed with our family, eight adults, five children plus two babies here once in our holiday week for lunch.
The food was fantastic and the service extremely nice and attentive. The children were very lovingly cared for.
Finally we visited the restaurant again in the evening. Again, it was uniquely delicious and the service excellent.
We haven't experienced such nice staff in a long time.
The dishes were all an experience!!!
We will definitely come back at the next stay in Piedmont!!!!!

Nice to have lunch at San Marco. Elegance reigns supreme, starting from Mrs Mariuccia, right from the response to the email you sent for the booking.
Her husband, and the boys who serve the tables, are always present but never intrusive.
Naturally delicious dishes.
Thank you for the nice experience, also from our greyhound!
