About
Beautiful Grade 2 listed pub with a small kitchen. Under New management since 3 June 2019. Steven and Amanda (Owners) are fully involved in the day to day running of the business and with their small team offer a friendly and informal service. We are very dog friendly and have a room called 'The Dog House' where dogs can bring their owners along for lunch or dinner. PLEASE NOTE - all of our food is homecooked in our small kitchen so our menu is limited. We do cater for vegetarians and food intolerances but need at least 24 hours pre warning as dishes will be cooked especially to suit guest requirements.

Drove over 80 miles to eat here after seeing details on Instagram. We received a warm welcome and were seated near the real fire. I already knew I wanted the Steak Gatsby, my good lady had the Braised Beef included in the pensioners special. Both...these dishes did not disappoint. My wife had Mushroom Pate to start and Apple and Cranberry Crumble, I had the South African dessert who's name alludes me, again both delightful. We would recommend eating here, it was well worth the 160 mile round trip.More

We had a lunch time meal here New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. On both occasions the food was excellent very well cooked and presented. The staff make you feel at home from the minute you enter the pub. They are very polite and...attentive. The pub itself has a very warm cozy feel about it. If we are ever visiting this way again we will definitely be calling in.More

My husband and I and our two friends went for lunch together as won’t see each other till after Christmas. We go here often as just love the food and service you get. The restaurant was tastefully decorated and even crackers on the table. Lovely...to see how busy it was with people enjoying themselves. Booking is advisable as they can get busy. The three course meal was lovely and beautifully presented. Definitely recommend and will see you in the New Year.More

Great atmosphere, very cosy on a Winter’s evening. Staff were young, enthusiastic, friendly and well-organised. We were seated as soon as we arrived (albeit rather early) and made to feel welcome by a lovely father and daughter just leaving the table that we were shown...to. Service was a perfect combination of invisibility and being there at the right time, with the landlord and wait staff working together seamlessly. The Christmas porter and mulled cider were both perfect for the season and the food was well worth the five mile walk on a crisp evening. Fried king prawns to start with a spicy and deep layered dip. My gatsby steak, egg and chip roll was a revelation and the piri piri sauce a great combination of citrus flavour with enough chilli to start the perspiration raunning down the back of my head. Staff and other eaters made a real fuss of our black cocker spaniel and we really enjoyed the five mile walk home too. Would heartily recommend it, and it was great value for money too, about 2/3 what we would expect in our native North Wales (and the beer was better too) ! Coming back for the food festival next year and the Royal Oak will be part of our plans.More

Went tonight and from the start made to feel welcome. Everyone was friendly and had a nice table in the corner with our dogs. Had a lovely pint of porter and having already seen the menu had my eye on the South Africa inspired bunny...chow. When it came I wasnt disappointed and well worth giving it a try if you are staying for food. Landlord came over and was really friendly and the dogs appreciated the dog bones they were given. Sadly we could stay too long but really enjoyed our time there and the log fire was a welcome touch! Highly recommend if you are in the area, hopefully will make it back before the end of our holiday to try some more South African inspired food, having said that the gammon on the next table looked immense.More

In these Covid restricted times what a lovely homely place to visit, it’s a proper pub with a really welcoming atmosphere, no background music playing just people talking and laughing and being friendly whilst still maintaining Covid standards. We booked for 6pm, they finish serving...food at 8pm, we followed their instructions when we arrived at the locked door, we were met by a member of staff wearing a face mask then shown to our table in “The Dog House”room, most appropriate for us as we are dog lovers, on this occasion we didn’t have our pooches with us. Instantly you get the ‘feel’ of the place, we were brought the menus and left to peruse them. A waiter came to take our drinks order but there was no rush for our food order, we got chatting to a couple near us who told us more about the pub and their menus, the Landlord came in to us but one of our daughter was delayed arriving, no rush, it’s fine, just enjoy your evening he said. He set the tone for the rest of our evening, the menu has something for everyone, there is a South African theme to some of the meals influenced by the Landlord and his connections to there, I chose good old Chicken Caesar Salad, my daughter had Tuna Niscoise and my husband had the Sirloin. The food arrived, no pretentious additions like some places like to add, proper well cooked and presented pub food, it was all delicious, my daughter asked that the chef be told that the Tuna on her salad was on a par with a top restaurant she’d eaten in, in Barbados. My daughter lives in Malton, we’re regular visitors and I can see the Royal Oak becoming our ‘regular’. We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening, made to feel very welcome in a traditional British pub. I can highly recommend this place, you won’t be disappointed.More

Stopped at The Royal Oak on the way home from a shopping trip to York. Very (dog) friendly welcome from the chatty and cheerful landlord. Great choices of English or South African dishes. Can recommend the lamb sosaties (spiced lamb and apricot kebabs). Cooked my...Mum and Wife’s very well done steak perfectly and made them smile with his request for a minute’s silence for the dead. Can also heartily recommend the lemon posset for dessert.More

We had been to Eden camp and wanted food on way home. Found this absolutely beautiful pub! Looks very plain on the outside, but when you go inside the staff and owner are just the most perfect hosts! The food was amazing…the ribs we to...die for and the malva pudding is definitely a winning dessert. They accept dogs and make them feel at home with a little treat. Can’t recommend this pub enough! From Manchester way but would have a day out this way and definitely stop here.More

This is one of the friendliest pubs I have been to. As soon as we walked in the door, we were greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. We arrived 30 minutes early so chose to sit in the beer garden for a drink...before our meal. The waiters were talkative and very professional. They bought us food menus whilst we were sat outside and gave us the option to stay outside until our food was nearly ready. The decoration inside is lovely; it felt very cosy and relaxing. The food was served promptly and well-presented. All five meals tasted amazing and were good value for money. I was especially impressed with all the sides with the burger, which included chips, a side salad, coleslaw and a little pot of chutney. The drinks were especially well-priced! It was brilliant to spend the last evening of our holiday here, and we would definitely return if in the area again. We want to thank all of the workers, especially Amy, our waitress, who was very professional!More
