The atmosphere, food and choice of beers are exceptional thanks to Steve and Amanda and their great staff. The food is first class and very reasonably priced. The choice of beers is amazing which always includes small private brewery ales. We visit here as often...as we can and always get a very warm welcome. Many thanksMore

We found that there was very little in Malton town for lunch, as we were visiting the town for their famous food market. We were recommended to drive a mile away to Old Malton to the Royal Oak pub and kitchen. It is a superb...example of a very tradtional country pub that serves first class quality food. A very friendly welcome and speedy delivery of food was appreciated. As well as fresh and very tasty standard English cuisine, there are some unusual items adapted from South African favourites, which was a welcome change. It is a Free House, so the choice of drinks is a treat also. Prices were very acceptable; we will be back!More

What a lovely little pub. It is warm, inviting and has a great vibe. Unfortunately, the kitchen does let it down. The service was friendly and attentive. As a South African, I was keen to try the South African cuisine on offer. These dishes are...not an accurate representation of South African cuisine and I feel quite embarrassed that people think this is what we, as South Africans, have on offer. The bunny chow curry was served in a weak, watery, insipid curry sauce. I use the word 'curry' with great generosity. The aromatics were not in keeping with a Durban curry which is home of the bunny chow. Just call it was it is, diced, freeze thawed chicken breast served in a bland sauce. No chutney. No sambals. But you get some Italian balsamic glaze on your garnish to go with your SA-Indian dish. Bizarre. My mother's 'Gatsby' was a huge sub roll stuffed with chips, cheese, eggs, an overcooked paper thin steak with zero marinade. No masala sauce to be seen. Just call it what it is. An over sized steak roll. Ordered dessert, thought to myself, they couldn't possibly ruin a Malva pudding? It arrived as a dry square of vanilla sponge, custard on the side. I realised it wasn't malva but I was ready to admit defeat and just try and enjoy it, that is, until I found a piece of cling film in my mouth. Clearly chef Mike'd with some cling film on top. Garnish (strawberry) was rotten and to add insult to injury, two Grey hairs made an appearance in the sponge. After bringing this to the attention of the manager?, who was ever so apologetic and sincerely so, he did want to hear us out, listen to our feedback which I can only applause. Some of the bill was reduced as a goodwill gesture. All I can say is the owner clearly has a lot to learn from the young manager who listened to our feedback. Surprised the owner/chef didn't come out and speak to us personally. In this cost of living crisis, one expects good value for money. I certainly will not choose to spend my money at The Royal Oak, despite the managers excellent attitude to customer concerns and his personable approach...judging by the owner's sarcastic responses to patrons less than favorable reviews, lessons will likely not be learnt.More

We were passing Malton on our way to Whitby and found this gem having read the Trip Advisor reviews! We got the warmest of greetings and were immediately shown to a table despite how busy they were! Lovely decor and really good atmosphere and the...food choices were great, with a lovely South African twist if you fancy it - my partner particularly enjoyed his Bobotie! The service was speedy (& very friendly) ...cant fault a thing! A must go if you're passing!More

We booked a table for lunch today after a lovely walk around Dalby Forest. We were particularly attracted to some of the traditional South African dishes on the menu. We were greeted by Steve and offered a table with our very large dog either inside...or out in the marquee in the garden. My husband went for the Steak Gatsby, an enormous sub with everything you could dream of inside, I had the Chicken Sosatie skewers which were really tasty with apricots and the curry dip. The burgers were also enjoyed by our children, freshly cooked with plenty of toppings. We also tried the squid starter, delicious! Steve checked on us during the meal and the rest of the team were very attentive and helpful also. We would definitely return to eat here again and recommend it to anyone in the Old Malton area. Thank you for a lovely meal and overall dining experience.More

On holiday, was just passing and decided to call in for pint. Sampled a nice guest bitter and the beer garden was marvellous. Staff really friendly. A couple of days later called in on spec for our tea. Absolutely amazing. A few dishes have a...South African slant due to Landlord coming from that neck of the woods. Having worked down there it was serving one of my all time favourites, Bunny Chow. Loved it. It’s a must if you’ve never tried it. Slightly spicy and very filling. The Landlord was proper old school. Very attentive but not in your face. He made us feel really welcome and with good food made the night. We had a little disappointment due to the fact that we tried to book in for Sunday Lunch. Because we left it late in the day they were fully booked, damn. We’ll be down there again so maybe next time. A nice holiday memory and a gem of a pub.More

We visit Steve regularly for lunch and dinner. The prices are excellent whether you’re on the seniors menus or their regular daily manure which is updated seasonally. The welcome you get from Steve is second to none. A gentleman in the truest sense and a...born comedian to boot. Everyone feels like they’re part of one big happy family. We have lunch for Birthdays with the family. We meet up with friends for lunch. We also have our evening just my wife and I. Valentines was especially good. The food is cooked and prepared by Amanda, Steve’s wife, and the menus is inventive and appetising whilst remaining traditional in every way. All the food served is cooked to order with the best ingredients from local farms etc. the staff are great, and even when busy, nearly every day, they still never rush you and have time for you. I have nothing but praise for both Steve and Amanda and their staff, who work tirelessly to ensure every customer leaves full and feeling a valued part of the Royal Oak.More

This correspondent has a penchant for establishments managed by eccentric fellows and their correspondingly diverse regulars. The fellow in question, one Steven Purcell, is no truer an example. The whole team are outstanding, well trained and true professionals. Food is always of high quality and...the menu suitably small yet diverse to maintain high quality. Ale is constantly rotating, with one regular house beer beautifully made by Yorkshire Heart Brewery. The regulars, are dealt with as family, despite the scrum at the bar. Jamie and Ben are psychic and will have a regular's beer poured and ready as the last pint is sunk... The beer garden is beautifully managed by Amanda. It is a wonderful oasis and unique in Old Malton, or even New Malton. This is a perfect place to eat, drink, make merry, turn up for a quiet drink or chat with friends. What joy to have a place such as this run by such a wonderful couple and their excellent team!More
