Best place in town! Authentic Japanese, super nice staff and excellent food. Your clothes can get a bit stinky but the rest is just great. Recommended dishes: Octopus tempura, fried pork gyozas, maguro sashimi and japanese fried onion.

II clearly have to know where to go if you want to find this hidden gem, but the pictures and explanations of fellow travelers on Trip Advisor helped a lot. Once there you enter probably the best Izakaya i have bee been to. It is...More

Wow. Authentic. Super cool, really Japanese place. Fantastic food. Super service. Just brilliant. Expect 50% tourists, but the feel is totally original Japanese. After your visit, laundry of your clothes is compulsory. But what the heck. The food is brilliant. Sashimi. Tempura. Salads. Shiitake mushrooms....More

A bit of an accidental find, and then legs under a low table [Japanese style]? But it looked really good, and proved to be so. A great variety of Japanese dishes, which all the gaijin [foreigners] at our three tables [conversation flowed freely] really enjoyed.

We spent three lovely hours at this authentic bar/cafe. Staff is very friendly, be prepared to wait for your meal when it's crowded though. Had 8 dishes between the two of us accompanied with some great umeshu (plum sake). Loved the kushikatsu and tsukune.

We took our family here and there was something for everyone, gyoza for the kids, delicious vegetarian dishes and sashimi for the sushi lover. The service was good and the price quite reasonable, definitely a find!

Be prepared to hunt for this gem. It is in a quiet street, set back from the road and with no English sign to guide you. We completely missed it the first night but went back the next evening and bravely entered what seemed to...More

It was nice. The portions were a little on the small size for two people that are into their fitness and eat a lot so you need to be willing to spend quite a bit here. We’ve been to a few places like this in...More

This was easily my favourite meal during my 1 week trip to Japan. Atmospheric, dark wood Izakaya a 10min walk from Kyoto station. Enormous menu with too many delicious dishes to try. You can sit at the counter watching the chefs or at low tables...More

Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub,
Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining,
and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with
tourists and local business travelers, making it a
competitive location for ever-new commercial
structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and
trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains.
