Monday night I felt would be an easy booking, it wasn't , we were offered a second seating option at 9pm which we took. Interestingly when we got there we were the only second seating, so I appreciated the accommodation. The setting is magnificent with...a beautiful lit garden. We had the Kawabun set menu which was beyond excellent in every course. I also appreciated the flexibility for my non meat eating wife which they accommodated seamlessly through the meat courses. The initial Foie Gras was a sublime first mouthful, pilchard, swordfish, beef, pasta all one better than the other. Wine Te KoKo which I rarely find was pricey but worth it, they also do very nice 1/2 bottles of red. We stayed late, not last, getting a taxi in pouring rain was a challenge but not so much that it caused any dulling of the experience. If ever in Nagoya again I would go back in a heartbeat. Loved it.More

Let me start by saying I’ve been here many times, at least +5. Used to be an amazing restaurant, great ambience, great food, great service. The attached bar called Octogon is still a very nice bar. My most recent trip here, food was sub-par (actually...physically ill a couple hours later after one of their shrimp dishes) and the service was really bad. An argumentative waiter who just couldn’t be bothered. I watched as he served other patrons and his bad attitude was the same. Very sad, used to be a great place. I reckon their management team had recently changed, ... for the worse.More

Ryoutei Kawabun is a traditional high-class Japanese-style restaurant. Allegedly, the offspring of a cook who served Tokugawa, tycoon, runs the restaurant. The Kawabun Nagoya is its branch that is western-style and more affordable. We sometimes have dinner there on the special days. This time, they...held a beer garden, which was an unprecedented event for themselves. It was a dim restaurant, which created a good atmosphere. It was all-you-can-eat-and-drink. We put a wide variety of food on our plates, got some bottles of beer and poured out juice. Every dish was delicious. I hope they hold a beer garden every summer!More

Went to the kawabun in Nagoya for dinner, and have never experienced such an incredible meal. I started the evening with a scotch and a perfect surrounding to enjoy it. Then had the most tender and flavourful steak I have ever had. Finished the evening...with a cigar and another scotch. I will visit this restaurant every time I am in Nagoya. The atrium is incredible if you can sit there in the evening and later hours. The fire and the pond is exquisite.More

We were invited by friends to a diner at this classical and historic site. The building is more than 400 years old and is the first to have exclusive rights in preparing fish for the Shogūn for Japan in that time. You dine in special...rooms overlooking the central pond with garden. Friendly staff, excellent food. Certainly worthwhile considering when in Nagoya.More

Our meal was simply delightful. My husband and I were looking to treat ourselves to our last night in Japan and Kawabun did not disappoint. Our pasta was cooked al dente and the flavours were intense and aromatic. Our pork dish was amazing and both...my husband and I commented that we didnt think a simple pork cutlet could taste that good. The memory of that taste will last a long time...More

They say, the restaurant concept is mixture of Taisho era and Western. I went for lunch a couple of times before and knew it's great place for having meal. We could see good Japanese garden with small pound over having lunch. This time I visited...with my friend for dinner. The atmosphere looked different. They have Japanese folding screen on the wall and it gives off special mood. They also have a snug bar, so after we had a dinner, moved to there and saw a garden from different angle. When I went there a few years ago, there was non-Japanese staff who spoke English, but this time I couldn't find him. Price is not reasonable, but I feel worthy enough. Hope you can find its value. If you like it, you can have a wedding or have business meetings on their 2nd or 3rd floor.More

After my fifth business dinner at Kawabun over the last two years I find myself with mixed emotions as this is one of the top restaurants in Nagoya, with a great ambience, excellent service (almost too good as the wait staff hover too much to...the point of being irritating and don't even think about pouring your own wine!), but the portion size for each "mini course" is just too small for the money...I always feel like I'm still hungry by the time I get back to my hotel. I kept asking for more bread this time so I at least felt like I had eaten. We also had a hard time finding a decent wine after two tries and two disappointing bottles we gave up. The food is well prepared, well presented, and for the most part tasty, but it's expensive and you must be prepared to leave hungry!More

This is one of the most value for money high end Italian restaurant using top local ingredients such as Aichi Beef, Geoduck, etc. The brilliance in the cooking shines through in how the various chefs synchronize the Japanese ingredients with Italian cooking. Each course within...the set menus are specifically prepared by different chefs. The wine list can be stronger but they have a nice cigar bar. It is wonderfully designed and very comfortable for either dining or drinks and cigar. The service staff were FANTASTIC and we were served very well. Will definitely make an effort to go back again!More

I visited here for my cousin's wedding at Nagoya. I really enjoyed the delicious food, gracious service, and beautiful setting. The food decoration is lovely and wonderfully served. Everything was presented exquisitely, and the garden of the restaurant was very beautiful.
