Honke Shibato’s unagi is one of those “must-try-at-least-once” kinds of things, along the same vein as Kobe beef and ramen. Sure, you could probably get it anywhere in Japan but wouldn’t it be best to try it the way the pros make it? And with...a 300-year-old legacy, you know Honke Shibato is one of the pros. It’s with this mindset that we ventured out to try them. We arrived early and didn’t have to wait at all. Three women warmly greeted us and made us feel at home right away. They shuffled us in and one of them escorted us up in an escalator into a warm room. Before we stepped in, she asked us to take off our shoes and we entered a cozy room with low-set tables. It reminded me of a traditional household I’d see in anime and whatnot. It was also the first time in our trip that we experienced anything like it. We ordered the Osaka-Mamushi set and a separate order of umaki. The waitress never left the room, despite the kitchen being somewhere else in the building, and was very attentive the entire time. While we did have to wait for a bit, she always kept us updated and made sure our cups of tea were never empty. Eventually, our food came and it was delicious! The eel in the Osaka-Mamushi set was crispy on the outside, and soft inside - something I’ve never experienced outside of this restaurant. You could tell that it was cooked with care (and potentially over a grill?). Although the sauce on top was thinner than most restaurants, it was not any less flavourful. The umaki was good as well but it paled in comparison to the Osaka-Mamushi set - mostly because you could barely taste the eel in it. Overall, it was a delicious meal and a terrific experience. That being said, it feels like another one of those things that you go to just the once to say that you’ve tried it. There’s a minimum ¥ amount that you must order (unfortunately, I don’t quite remember the amount at this point) and each item on the menu is quite pricey. While the unagi was very good and did have a characteristic that I haven’t found elsewhere (i.e. crispy outside, soft inside), that characteristic is also not that crucial to my enjoyment of the dish. Perhaps I’m just not an unagi connoisseur - I can appreciate the difference but I personally don’t feel like it warrants that steep of a price hike. Personally, I’m glad to have experienced it and would recommend you going for the experience. But if you are like me - not a unagi connoisseur - and looking for something more cost-effective, maybe try somewhere else...More

I wanted to compare Kansai styled Unagi vs Kanto styled Unagi that I just ate in Tokyo. I ordered the Osaka Mamushi (eel on rice with sauce) and was delighted to find another layer of Unagi sandwiched between the rice underneath. The highlight of the...night was the Unagi Sirayaki (eel simply grilled without sauce). The skin was crisp on the outside and the meat was tender and naturally sweet in flavor. This dish makes Kansai styled eel live up to my expectations! But the eel with sauce I thought was not so easily differentiated from the Kanto styled eel that I have been more familiar with.More

We visited the restaurant in mid-May, 2018. Instead of ordering traditional unagi don, I specifically ordered SHIRAYAKI SET for the reason to see if unagi is still cooked right without sauce. It is perfect, crispy outside and juicy inside. The sweet taste of fresh eel...is sensed when I take the first bite. The restaurant attendants are very courtesy and professional. Only drawbacks, cash only and close Sunday and Monday. Hope they will change these policies.More

First off, had huge expectations for this restaurant. Quick to get seated but waited over 30 minutes for the unagi to be prepared. What’s even worse is that the unagi was not up to expectations, average at best. Overhyped with the waiting so would not...come again.More

This restaurant serves only unagi and anago dishes. We ordered two sets: a large "ohitu-mamushi" and a small "Osaka-manushita". The amount of food was enough for my boyfriend and I. We were quite full too. You can choose between a miso soup or a kimosui...soup (clear broth with eel liver). If you choose the ohitu-mamushi set, then I'd recommend the kimosui soup because one of the ways of enjoying the food in this set is to mix the soup into the rice. The kimosui soup is clearer and less full bodied in flavor and that compliments the rice and unagi well enough without covering their tastes. If you don't plan to mix the soup into the rice then the miso soup may be a better choice. The service was really good. The food was OMG amazing. It's a must try and I would love to come back again. This is a cash only restaurant and they close quite early.More

Good service! The waitress was polite and took time to explain the dishes to customers. After placing an order, we had to wait 15-20 minutes for the foods to be served. They served only Japanese eels and noting else. The dishes were excellent in a...clean and pleasant environment. This place is a hallmark of people who love to eat Japanese eels.More

Doesn't required any heavy sauces to go along with this unagi. Tastes really good and I'm able to smell the charcoal flavor too.

I had read some very favorable reviews about this old grilled eel shop so really wanted to try. The shop is small with about 20 seats on the 2nd floor of a building in a business district. We had the medium size grilled eel over...rice. It was good with generous portions of eel on two layers - one on top of the rice and another in the middle. The sauce was tasty without being too sweet but I found the eel to be a bit dry. It was not cheap at JPY4,600. The service was good but overall I was a little disappointed.More

We followed the recommendation from a well travelled Japanese foodie to this 15 generation establishment. The unagi was grilled to perfection and the culinary hospitality was top of the class. Try the eel with sauce on rice as well as plain plus all the entree...and side dishes. You would be a convert even if you never thought of eel as an edible thing.More

We stumbled across this restaurant while preparing for our trip online and decided to have lunch there since it's quite close to our hotel. The grilled eel is sooo delicious. The portion is really big. I ordered a S size eel rice bowl and the...boyfriend ordered a M. We couldn't finish our rice (but ate all the eel regardless). So yummy!More
