Very cozy Japanese restaurant with excellent Karage. Good service. They give you an English menu if you ask. Reasonable prices

Great atmosphere, great food and drinks, very reasonable prices. Downstairs, medium sized place. Crowded enough to create a happy buzz and warm vibe, but not overcrowded.

My parents were quite disappointed by Kuriya but I thought it was pretty good. We had a little trouble finding it because the google maps location was off by a meter. I will say the "yakitori selection platter" or signature selection that I ordered wasn't...for me, because it was gizzard and skin or something and I didn't quite enjoy itMore

Having lived in Japan for 2 years in the past, we went in search of an old style Japanese restaurant with a bar and individually prepared varied small plates for our final dinner in Tokyo. Based on the Tripadvisor reviews for Kuriya, we booked a...table for 5 (3 adults, 2 teens). When we entered the basement restaurant, it felt warm, lovely and quiet with wood paneling on the walls. Then we looked around and noticed that there were only tourists at the other tables. Hmm... The menu was good and we ordered a large variety of small plates. The quality went from poor (octopus balls - the oil was stale) to a fantastic dish of 3 oysters grilled in miso. In between were fried rice and yakatori skewers and a respectable asparagus/ham dish. At some point, the server set down 5 small cups of potato salad that we hadn't ordered but he placed them as a gift (so we assumed). We also had desserts. When the bill came, we looked at it because we were dividing it among 2 families. We were charged 1900 Yen (Y380 times 5) for a dish we didn't recognize so we asked. We were told it was for the "appetizer" - the potato salad we didn't order - and that was the policy of the restaurant and the charge wouldn't be reversed. We looked more closely and the there was also a 10% fee added onto the entire bill. That is a HUGE NO-NO in Japan. There is no tipping and no tax on restaurant food unless it's specified on the menu. It made us wonder exactly who wrote all those rave reviews we read here. Kuriya was the most disappointing meal of our entire trip because it felt so out-of-sync with the Japanese culture we know and love.More

We came here for a dinner with friends after 14-day long journey throughout Japan and we were utterly impressed. Bar serves traditional Japanese dishes in a relatively small portions (which are truly cheap as well). We had a mix of about 10-12 dishes and three...rounds of drinks for which we have paid 14,000¥ in total. In addition to great food there is a super friendly staff which makes sure that you don’t miss anything. If you’re staying in Shinjoku, make sure to have a dinner here! P. S. There is an English menu, but ask your waiter to translate you “today’s specials” which are only in Japanese.More

Small basement restaurant with masses of character, great service and fantastic food. We had yellowfin sashimi, vegetable & seafood tempura, clams in butter and softshell crab - all sublime. With 2 beers, ¥4,100 (~£31) - a fantastic meal

Kuriya is a small restaurant in shinjuku. They charge a cover charge of around 3 dollars per person. There are a few tables and its a little dark. Services is great and the staff speak English. English menu as well. There are a few different...things on the menu so you can mix up. We had yakitori, tempura, an amazing tuna sashimi, chicken and sake. Its not particularly cheap but fair prices. Totally recommended!!!More

Selected this restaurant based on the many positive reviews found on two of the big review sites. After having eaten there for dinner last night I had to go back to read some of the reviews again to see if I had the wrong place....We arrived a little before 7 pm on a Tuesday night and were seated immediately. Shortly after arriving one of my dinner companions killed a cockroach crawling up the wall next to our table. I asked him if he wanted to leave (I kind of did) and he said no. We ordered the fish cakes (based on other reviews I had read) and when they arrived we spent 10 minutes trying to figure out if there was any fish at all in it (it had a slight fish smell but it seemed to be 100% tofu). Of the five items we ordered, the only one that was decent was the pumpkin and cheese balls (and they were excellent!!). The tempura was totally tasteless and we left half of it uneaten (same with the fish cakes). Really, the best thing I can say about this place is that it cost us only about 5000 for three people, including two sodas and one glass of wine. A waste of an opportunity to have a good dinner of local Tokyo fare.More

Great food for vegetarians as well! Not so cheap, but worth it. They accept credit cards as well. In the middle of the centre you have to take the stairs down to enter the restaurant. Come early or make a reservation, otherwise it might not...be possible to find a table.More

Delightful restaurant in classic Japanese style but with an interesting menu. Very welcoming and good English spoken. The crispy chicken skin gyoza ( using skin as a wrapper) was tasty. The entrance is mostly Japanese language

Follow the reviews on TA. I find the atmosphere bit odd. Whole place packed with foreigners which gave me a sense of western restaurant being in Tokyo. Staff is really friendly and fast. Food is average. Decent and at average prices.

Small cute restaurant with lovely food and vibe. Very good value too. Approx €40 for two with drinks. Would definitely recommend it. You can’t reserve a table so just arrive and you may have to wait.

Not big enough for 50 as it's only very small. There are vegetarian options, but they may not be good for strict vegetarians
