This was a great find, not only is it a very unique little spot to stop for a coffee and lunch, the owners were amazing. So very friendly and helpful. They made me the very best cup of coffee to go that I had had my whole trip to New Zealand, and Canadians love their coffee! Their daughter did the... More

The food all round it average. They don't serve alternative butter (dairy free). The coffees are not that good but the price is up there with the city prices! They don't cater to smokers and the free water has a cost plus its warm water not chilled.

Management response:

Dear Karangaranga, Thank you for your feed back. I would like to address each of the statements you have made in your review from 2 days ago. We have never advertised that we are a vegan cafe. If you heard that we are, or you thought we were, you would be disappointed. The coffee we use here, is Allpress. If... More

Located partly over the water, this red, old boat shed resembles what we have in the Lofoten Islands of my home country. The interior reflects its original use and location, and it has a small gallery inside the cafe. A small deck on the outside is perfect on a sunny day just to sit and gaze across the water with... First visited this cafe four years ago with our family, and returned in May, 2016. Its a quirky cafe in an old wooden building, and the setting is amazing, with a deck literally hanging over the water at Hokianga Harbour. I think its a great place to sit and enjoy the view. over a cuppa. The cafe is featured in a... More

Unfortunately we missed the old owners who I believe had the cafe for 25 years or so, and were even written up in Cuisine magazine. An okay place to stop for a coffee while waiting for the ferry, but wouldn't recommend it as a destination in itself. Coffee was a bit milky, service was acceptable but nothing special. Food was... the deck overlooks the river- even in July it was great to sit out with a coffee and cake watching the river and bird life before visiting Clendon house just 50 yards down the road .

Closed on Mondays, as is most of Rawene. (Local informed us that Mondays are a holiday) so called back in next day at same time and it was closing

Management response:

Hi there, I'm sorry to hear that you arrived at the Boatshed when we were closed. Firstly, we definitely serve coffee. Delicious, Allpress coffee. Secondly, it sounds like you came "after" our opening hours, as we were definitely open on this date. Also, you have been incorrectly informed, as we are open every day of the week, Monday through to... More

Not sure if service a little slow was due to it being winter, but half way through serving us, he starts playing around with his radio, So found it all a little strange, food average,

I went to the Cafe for a beautiful refreshing lunch and sat out on the deck under the soft palms over looking the Hokianga Harbour. I would highly recommend this Cafe because it's quest is to provide everything fresh and locally sourced and made in their kitchen. The new owners are Beale and Terehia, they are friendly and very down... More
