I have driven past this pub hundreds of times but never before been in it. The wine selection was excellent with French and Spanish wines available as well as new-world ones; my partner and I both had the smoked haddock pie which was really fantastic as were the desserts. The staff were friendly and helpful. Altogether I certainly recommend it;... More

Popped in for a drink just before two pm today. The pub was busy. Disappointed to see that Blackboys has gone over to a foodie pub with a tepid welcome for the casual drinker. A pint of Harvey's, bottle of coke, packet of cheese and onion crisps and packet of peanuts £8.75! Chap behind the bar was just about civil.... More

We'd been to Bateman's, Rudyard Kipling's former home, nearby, and it was 3.30pm. You know how it is in the countryside. All the pubs stop serving food at 2.30pm - but not this baby! A warm welcome, an amazingly varied menu, and all still available! Artisan bread from Flint Owl bakery, fragrant olive oil to dip, and proper olives served... More

One of the best vegetarian meals I've ever had, and I've been vegetarian for 30 years. As a vegetarian you get used to 'making do' and having to be grateful for anything. I wasn't expecting any better, so when the food arrived I was quite shocked....but in a good way!!! Here was a plate of food prepared with the same... More

Had sea bass with crab bonbon and crab mousse on a base of fennel and samphire Outstanding food, great atmosphere, great staff, great beer. What more can you ask for? Bedrooms, perhaps? And there we have it- the most comfortable bedrooms you'll find in the heart of Sussex.

My three courses were good but there were certain things that let it down. I chose the beef and foie gras to start which was delicious with an amazing sauce but we were given no bread or roll which I would have liked to mop up the sauce. My main course, venison, was again cooked well but there was no... More

This beautiful Olde English pub is a delight visually but historically has been very hit and miss when it comes to dining. Having given it a wide berth for some time we recently returned following recommendation from friends and had very good meals. Consistency has been the problem in the past and they appeared to have got it sorted. However... More

This is a beautiful old building with a friendly country pub atmosphere. Excellent harveys beers (at cellar temperature). Visited many times and came here today for the sunday roast. Roast beef was excellent with good selection of vegetables including the brussel sprouts. Will be back

Good and bad really. On the plus side, this is a beautiful country pub, nice local atmosphere, good selection of beers and friendly staff. We were seated and served really quickly and I was impressed with the menu. Unfortunately my pheasant (which was lovely) had to be sent back because it was too pink, the pate, however, was more grey... More
