Was just on a trip with my mom, make this restaurant a must-do. Amazing, slow cooked food and great service. Do not miss the chance to have a meal or two here. All family recipes made to order of traditional Oaxacan food. Can't wait to come back!

Just stumbled onto this place while out sight seeing. It is on the second floor of an old building (no elevator). Menu is very Oaxacan. Our waitress explained in detail (and with patience) every item we asked about. Both of our meals were excellent. We had a table right in front of the open window with a good view of... More

We visited this restaurant early evening because it was so highly rated on TripAdvisor. What a disappointment! My wife had a grasshopper salad which consisted of a base of iceberg lettuce, a few pieces of tomato, some shreds of local cheese and a large handful of grasshoppers thrown on top! We have had some wonderful dishes prepared with grasshoppers in... More

The abuela who owns this restaurant took our order, then went into the kitchen to help cook the food. I had the chili rellanos with the crickets in them, it was awesome! I also had fresh guava juice to drink. Nice place, very cozy and quiet on second floor, couldn't ask for nicer.

I came here because I had read that this is THE place in Oaxaca to go for moles. After eating here, I certainly can't argue against that. I had the Coloradito mole with chicken and it was simply delicious--VERY complex and rich in flavor. My starter was a bit of a surprise. I ordered the bean soup and when it... More

We had a great, super authentic culinary experience here. The mole tasting of five different moles was very informative and straight up delicious. The service was wonderful and hospitable and the cooking was heartfelt. The mole tasting finished with a complimentary glass of mezcal, it was one of the best we had, which was straight from the jug of the... More

We really enjoyed the mole plates we ordered, but more than that, we found the service attentive, informative, and truly sweet. Our server took the time to explain mole preparation to us and we felt very at home with her. Recommend if you are traveling and want a little comfy spot for the night.

I have been visiting El Escapulario for the past 5 years and it never lets me down. La señora Alonso makes wonderful, original dishes and the prices are reasonable. She always makes her customers feel like guests. I especially recommend the tortilla soup and the mango chicken. Visit this charming little restaurant for an authentic Oaxacan experience.

Homey atmosphere, traditional food well prepared and flavorful. Definitely a favorite during our two week stay in Oaxaca. Esther, the down to earth and owner and cook, could not have been nicer as we tried to decide between the dishes. I do remember the wonderful mole! Service is leisurely, but that was okay!
