What a delicious meal. The restaurant was recommended by friends, and did not disappoint. The service was wonderful. My husband had the steak Diane which we both felt was one of the best steaks we'd ever eaten. I had the scallops with Boudin Noir which were simply delicious. Would thoroughly recommend

I had a lovely anniversary meal here with my wife. However the noise level in the place was horrific, couldn't have a conversation without shouting. The table next to us full of obnoxious, self absorbed, drunken work colleagues. Food was delightful, tasty, prompt, server was knowledgable. I'd return not for a special occasional maybe dinner with work colleagues!

Small, trendy restaurant. Service was fine and the food was good with a particularly nice selection of appetizers. Standout dish was the braised lamb though. It was truly amazing.

We visited L'Abbatoir for dinner yesterday evening following a recommendation that it was one of the leading restaurants in Vancouver. Unfortunately, the experience fell significantly below expectations. In total we had three dishes: snails with mushrooms, roasted squash with poached egg and lastly ling cod with sunchokes. The meal began with a lovely 3 piece bread bowl consisting of a... More

We sat at the bar and the bartender had a wide knowledge of the beverage menu. Our cocktails were made with flair and were simply delectable. I wish I could recall his name. It was a Sunday evening

The food and the service was good. The house baked breads were a great way to start the meal and then we worked our way through some tasty treats.

We decided to have dinner at one of the top rated restaurants in Vancouver on Thanksgiving weekend so we made reservations and stepped int one of the finest meals we've ever had. What an amazing meal we had, starting with the little basket of fresh baked breads at the start through appetizers and into the main meal. The food grad... More

This restaurant had been on my list for a while. My husband and I were disappointed by the lack of attention to detail. The tables were very close and could hear the conversations from adjacent tables. Waiters and servers reached over you not around you, water spilled over the table with being poured, etc. Main course $40 each, desserts were... More

Busy place. I happened to arrive while happy hour was still on so really good prices on food and drink. I got the last seat at the bar. Everyone was very attentive. I liked that the place was busy and buzzing. I ordered the snails and sweetbreads. Not together! Separate dishes. Both were fantastic as was the cocktail and glass... More

Although this is an expensive place to eat, it is comparable with other fine dining venues in this expensive city. And the food is excellent. Reasonable portion size, the menu is creative, but with the staple classics still there. The steak is just fabulous. Tender, flavoursome and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Terrific staff, extensiv ewine list for those who know... More

Description
L'Abattoir is located in the center of Gastown between historic Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley. The restaurant was built in the 19th century and is the site of Vancouver's first jail. Originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building that combines classic French tile work with industrial fixtures, natural wood, and glass and steel finishes, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge setting, elevated dining room and plush, sun soaked atrium. Chef Lee Cooper and Owner / Operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating and drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. French influenced West Coast fare is paired with Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and Bar Manager Thor Paulson's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience. L'Abattoir adds to Gastown's bustling breakfast scene with a menu mixing comforting staples with hearty, unique entrees. Thirsty brunchers can sip on creative cocktails, as well as daily feature vermouth on the rocks. Non-alcoholic options include daily bottled house made iced teas. Just adjacent to L'Abattoir's regular dining room is the restaurant's stunning new private dining facility. The 1,200 sq ft. facility features historical architectural elements complimented by a contemporary design aesthetic. While large enough for 50 people seated or 70 standing, the room retains an intimate ambiance and a noise-reducing barrier blocks out the hustle and bustle of the regular dining room.

Staying in Gastown

Neighbourhood Profile
Gastown
A visit to Gastown is like turning back the clock and stepping into a bygone era. With the distinction of being Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, the many plaques that stud the cobbled streets of Gastown tell the story of its colorful past, giving Vancouver's history a more lively presence here than anywhere else. Having been originally founded around a popular worker's saloon, it's no wonder that today some of Vancouver's best micro-breweries, creative cocktail joints, and corner bars can be found in this area. Classical charm suffuses its many vintage boutiques and the brick-built structures that an army of creative professionals call home.
