The special tonight was a vegetarian plate; although I'm not a vegetarian, I ordered it and once again considering a vegetarian lifestyle if I could learn these recipes. Every item on the platter was unique yet, complimentary. The service was just as one would expect from a small restaurant where the waitress is also the chef; she took genuine care... More

My wife and I found this little gem on Commercial Drive. Not familiar with the menu, the owner suggested a vegetarion combo and a meat dish, we chose lamb, in order to try the most things on the menu. The food was fantastic and she explained how things were prepared. An excellent experience.

I'm from east Africa, and have grown up on the menu served at Addis, and after having moved out of my parents place, I've been seeking that same home cooked authentic traditional food just like mama and her mama before used to make it...and here it is...I'M HOME :)

My favorite Ethiopian restaurant closed down years ago and I had been told that this was their new location. I apparently was told the wrong thing. This restaurant may have had a very similar menu but the atmosphere and service was nothing like my old favorite Ethiopian restaurant. My guests and I were largely ignored even though there were very... More

We get to come here once or twice a year and crave it constantly. We usually go for the veggie platter for two but sometimes add some meat. It's delicious!!!! The owner is very friendly and extremely accommodating. We've also booked dinners for larger parties (12+ people) and have never been let down. The price is good the food is... More

We went to this place after reading everyone else's review about the place. We came right after we just trekked up Grouse Mountain. So we were starving. The decor consists of artistic figurines and photos of people from the home country which were great. We were given the lunch menu. The menu was simple to read but with great items... More

Great restaurant that allowed for a unique experience underlied by absolutely great food. The owner was great in explaining what to order and how to go about eating the meal with your hands. The food was also beautifully presented. And dont be fooled by the price. It is a lot of food!

The food here is really good and it comes in large portions. If you've never had Ethiopian before, it's typically served on large platters with a flatbread. The whole dining experience is quite communal, which makes it even more fun if you're with a group of friends. The service is good and the owner is very kind. Prices range between... More

This a lovely small cafe on Commercial Drive (btw 4th & 5th Av) run by a friendly owner. Lovely atmosphere. Good service. Quite inexpensive. Some of the best Ethiopian food in town. Awaze Tibs comes with beef, lamb, goat, or chicken sautéed with Ethiopian red pepper sauce, onions, and green peppers. The original veggie combo is presented as a palette... More

Addis Cafe is amazing. The food is incredible with lots of variety, including vegetarian and vegan options. The owners are wonderful people too. What else can I say, the food is just so gosh darn good. By far, the BEST restaurant in Vancouver.

Staying in Commercial Drive

Neighbourhood Profile
Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive, also called "The Drive," comprises of twelve sauntering blocks of modest and unfussy counter-culture. Straddling the line between sophisticated and unadorned, it is favoured by students, artists, writers, designers, and start-ups, and suffused throughout with a healthy off-beat counter-culture. The kind of neighbourhood which well-springs thought-revolutions and has the odd bit of self-aware graffiti, Commercial Drive has resisted gentrification in favor of continuing to build a thriving den of affordable multiculturalism. Once known as Vancouver's "Little Italy," it has also been the immigration point for Guatemalans, Hondurans, and Portuguese to the city. The resulting hodgepodge makes for poetry readings in espresso cafes, social debates in early-open bakeries, and eco-activism posters pinned up in the many multi-ethnic markets in the area. Commercial Drive is where you go to feel like a local, and if you have them, bring the kids – The Drive has a number of bookshops, toy stores, and attractions to get them involved too.
