Went here with my family during Christmas and had hot chocolates and cookies. The only downside was that the place is very popular and not too many seats. My young daughter, son and nephews had a older woman hogging a sofa upstairs sofa which was unfortunate. Her "friend" never did show up.

Located in the very charming and unique Destilery Distric in the old city of Toronto, Balzac cafe offers a very unique atmosphere! Beautiful well kept bricked arquiteture with a stunning chandelier hanging from the sealing, Balzac offers organic coffee (cortados, mochas, lattes, capuccinos) and teas (Matcha Green tea latter, chais) and a small variety of baked goods - home made... Visited the Mill st. building with the family in November. Went into Balzac's to get out of the cold and the rush of the Christmas market. Very eclectic space. Very busy. Coffee was a bit bitter. Apple cider was delicious, and the Hot chocolate was good. They also sell baked goods, and a few gluten free items.

Went to the Distillery Christmas Market and stopped at Balzac's for some got drinks. When we walked in they were sampling some Turkish Delight (Rose or Pistachio) which were both good. We had Ciders and this hot lemon and ginger drink with maple syrup (can't remember the name unfortunately). Both were very good. The atmosphere is great as well.

I am in love with a Latte. Best I've ever had, did not have to put any sugar in it...Now I have a craving. The pastry was amazing as well, lemon tea biscuit. I am not usually a fan of lemon but my daughter got it and we shared. Delicious. Perfect place to warm up with coffee and a treat!

I like the space, especially the second floor. Of course it's not always easy to find a seat but if you do, it's a pretty ambiance for a coffee meet up with a friend.

I was wandering around the old distillery district in the early morning and happy to find the Balzac's (opens at 7am). And just listening to Jacques Brel while writing the review... fantastic!

Be sure to go upstairs and see if the balcony tables are available and you can people watch while enjoying the delicious cappucinos they make! So much atmosphere for a coffee shop!

Great coffee within historic building offers and stylish coffee bar. The coffee is pretty much standard but the atmosphere is great.

From the pretentious signs on the doors "no pictures allowed" etc to the gum-chewing clerk who had zip personality, I don't get the extreme recommendations. The setting is great but not much concept to the service.

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown
At the heart of Toronto, Downtown is the destination for cheap eats and fast fashion. Cut through by hip and trendy Yonge Street, the vibe here is young, with a strong student influence from the Ryerson University Campus. As a result, the Downtown area is always in flux: undergoing the construction of new facilities, with fresh retail spaces and pop-up cafes. Home to Toronto's largest indoor shopping mall, a number of vintage cinemas, and a healthy nightlife centered on the area's Distillery District bar and clubs near the East End, it's both an easygoing daytime spot and a popular party place after sunset. It also features some of Toronto's best outdoor landmarks, including Yonge-Dundas Square and the Nathan Phillips Square: perfect for a concert, a skate, or a relaxing sit-down.
