After 28 years of truly great food and a go to spot for locals seeking their Asian fix, Asuka has closed. The building is to be torn down to make room for street level high end retail. Wish Asuka could afford to stay in the hood, it will be missed.

Asuka is one of the first sushi restaurants I went to when I was first introduced to sushi many moons ago. This place hold fond memories of good meals with friends and family over the years and there has never been a time where food and service were not exceptional. You can always expect something new and unique when you... More

Tiny place, lower level (basement), easy to miss. Fills up quickly at lunch. The menu covers all the usual sush/Japanese staples but there are quite a few items meant to be shared or for a group. Service always pleasant and prompt. I thought the nigiri were smaller than they used to be but the fish is fresh and nicely presented.... More

The atmosphere is a bit sketchy, but it doesn't matter if you are there for the food! The seaweed salad was excellent and the spicy tuna rolls melted in your mouth (in a good way- not because they were warm...). We both ordered a Chirachi plate, which was a large variety of sashimi on a layer of rice. We ate... More

It starts at the front entrance...dirty. There are cob webs around the sushi bar and the display case is full of grime. The tables are sticky. What was once a great place has become a disgusting hole in the wall. If you want good sushi, find another place.

We used to love this place. It was always a fun experience to sit at the sushi bar and interact with the chef. We were looking forward to a return visit, but were disappointed. The food was OK, but nothing spectacular. The personal experience matched what I've had at Sushi Q in food courts. Too bad ...

This very good sushi bar was just one block off Bloor but it's located down a few steps from street level. Asuka has curtained booths if you are a small group, or a romantic couple, and the tables are separated by Japanese screens throughout the restaurant. The sushi was excellent and very fresh.

Firstly, the service was nice, we were immediately welcomed and seated across from the sushi chef. I was craving something warm so ordered the Niku Don Buri, which in the past I've loved. This time, the texture seemed off, and upon tasting it, it was definitely reheated as parts of it were cold and the rest piping hot. The meat... More

Fantastic little restaurant in Yorkville serving great traditional sushi. Highly recommended. Can be a little hard to find as it is tucked away in a basement, but well worth finding.

This little hole in the wall in Yorkville is apparently quite famous for stars that have come by during TIFF, etc. but on most regular days it's accessible to us normal folk. Good, higher than medium end but not quite high end sushi at reasonable price. Probably not a bad idea to make a reservation - but usually you don't... More

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown is a dynamic part of Toronto with some of its most stylish high-rise residences and heritage buildings. The area sees busy shoppers with bag-laden arms balancing lattes in paper cups as they travel from one luxury brand to the next, taking advantage of the proximity of high-end shops. The reflecting pools, jogging trails, and nature treks of the Rosehill Revision are always a hub of outdoor activity, and after a workout from either running or splurging, many take advantage of the spas and massage parlors Midtown has to offer. Away from the bakeries, boutiques, and glamorous old theaters of the district's center, locals use the weekend to embrace the more suburban feel of Midtown's parks, tennis courts, outdoor markets, and the manicured grounds of Casa Loma, while families indulge the area's state-of-the-art playground and learning facilities. Of course, no high-brow district is complete without a healthy counter-culture: Midtown boasts some of the wildest street art and full-wall graffiti of any neighborhood in Toronto.
