Visited based on TripAdvisor reviews and it turned out great. This is a hidden gem! Small restaurant, maybe 15 tables, all with "traditional" checkered table cloths. Nicely decorated, simply a great intimate atmosphere. And as expected, not many people on a Sunday night. What flavourful food! First we shared an appetizer of cold cuts, cheese, and pickled veggies, all was... More

I've eaten here many times now, and always leave feeling fantastic and content. The food is consistently excellent, and good value. The staff, especially the main chef, are always friendly, gracious and welcoming.

I recently visited The Big Ragu with three business associates, and was welcomed by the owner/chef Johnny, who made us feel we were in his home. We all started with an appetizer of homemade gnocchi in a tomato sauce. It is the best gnocchi I have ever eaten, and that includes 5 star restaurants in Italy. We all had a... More

We visited The Big Ragu early evening on a Monday. It was a quiet night, and we were greeted by Johnny the owner and master chef. We started with an appetizer of gnocchi in a delicious red sauce, which was the best we have ever experienced. Our entrees: my wife had a veal chop.with a side of pasta, and I... More

A cozy spot with a reasonably-priced fare. A good wine selection too to compliment the bold Italian flavours of the pasta.

I was here a couple of times a few years ago and was impressed with food and the service. On a whim I returned on a Sunday night for dinner. A few years ago the place was packed. This time we were the only ones in the restaurant...what happened? The food is still quite good and the service was great;... More

Arrived early for dinner. Good thing as it got packed so it's apparently popular. Small space. Atmosphere was cozy and pleasant until the busier hours came. Salads were very good. Chicken was mediocre and a small piece. Osso bucco was amazing. Service was not great. Waitress was rather inattentive to our table throughout most of our meal. Took too long.... More

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
The go-to area for new business start-ups, the spry and creative persona of the West End thrives along its streets. Its independent boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and shops offer brands that can't be found elsewhere. Buildings with ground floor consumer spaces sport up-top artist's lofts, and the West End attracts artists, designers, and fashion industry professionals to its living quarters. It is in the cross-hairs of gentrification, but still resisting it with ironic relish. Hot deals can still be found here on furniture and knick-knacks,. Its call to culinary glory is in its well-priced homemade Polish food, hosting Toronto's go-to spots for hot pierogis and cold borscht. High Park, the largest green space in the city, is a place for dreamers and poets to wander and rest, not to mention a number of energetic actors staging outdoor plays in the summertime.
