We loved that this restaurant keeps it simple when cooking seafood. Crispy grilled sardines served with tomato and red pepper slices lightly dressed; pan-fried cod with beans, broccoli, and potatoes; mussels, clams, fish, and chorizo served on a bed of tomato flavoured rice, a bit wetter than paella. They preview the dinner with two kinds of bread (corn bread is... More

Walked down the narrow streets of Old Montreal and found the side door to Porto Mar on Saint Francois Xavier street to be a cozy welcome out of the cold late afternoon. It`s amazing that we were to have supper in such an ancient building that was very well renovated to suit our modern-day needs. The staff was very well... More

Am a regular lunch customer who loves the old school ambience, great value , fresh fish always prepared just so and accompanied with the right sides. Very friendly and curteous staff who work as a team, excellent value for money, don't miss this spot slightly off the beaten track.

Very friendly service, nice atmosphere and good food. However the restrooms could be much cleaner. Will come again!

Thank you for your review. We apologize for the state of the restrooms. Unfortunately the restrooms are not the responsibility of the restaurant but rather the building owner but will definitely pass your feedback along. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you again. More

We had such a fantastic experience in our first visit to Porto Mar, we returned for a 2nd dinner during our 6 day visit to Montreal. Our hosts, owners Tony and Passos, provided great suggestions for both food and wine, and we were delighted with the choices. We had the fresh Cod the first visit, and the Monkfish Provencal the... We read about this great little gem and were delighted to find the reviews were exactly correct. Charming, historic decor, quiet enough for a wonderfully stress free dinner where I could speak to my husband and relax after a long day of travel. We had the fresh baked cod and were delighted with the simplicity of the preparation and how... More

We had been to a number of restaurants in Old Montreal but Porto Mar was the best and a bargain by comparison. We went with a group of four. We are fresh seafood lovers and this was as good as we have ever had- anywhere. The service, the historic space, the service, the bread, the wine, the ambiance was all... More

Another great reasonably priced restaurant in Old Montreal. Six of us ate lunch on a Friday. Enjoyed the quietness for visiting. Complete meals were offered which included 3 choices for starters & either mousse or flan as choices for dessert. Service was a bit too slow between the starter course & main courses. We blamed it on the one who... More

Sometimes you can tire of yet another over-complicated dish of seafood - if so, this is the restaurant for you. The owner and most of the staff hail from Portugal and produce well-prepared unfussy seafood (and also meat dishes), typically grilled or oven-cooked and not drowned in sauces - you can taste the fish! The restaurant is located in the... More

Good Portuguese food: The menu and table d'hote is varied and everyone will find something good to eat. Good ambiance: Nicely decorated restaurant with a "castle feel like" to it. Great staff and the service was on point. A must go, in the heart of Old Montreal!!

Lovely restaurant in Old Montreal. A little off the main rue St Paul, but worth it for good quality food and service.

Staying in Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)

Neighbourhood Profile
Vieux-Montreal (Old Montreal)
The historic centre of Montreal, Vieux-Port is home to some of the city's most antiquated buildings and picturesque streets. Along the waters of the St. Lawrence River, the bank of Old Port features museums, festivals, food stalls, and outdoor athletics, a celebrated part of the city that explodes into fireworks displays on warm summer nights. At its centre, street performers and artists compete with sprawling restaurant terraces for space along Jacques-Cartier Square, while the cobbled streets of Rue St. Paul and Rue Notre-Dame offer a reprieve of quiet galleries and atmospheric wine bars. Horse-drawn carriages are not an uncommon part of traffic, and the narrows they traverse are lined with boutiques, crêperies, and poutine shops enshrined in buildings of stone and wooden lattices. Here you can evoke Montreal's past with a traditional cooking lesson or historical tour, then enjoy its artistic present with live music and theatre.
