There is a reason La Banquise is known as the place to go for poutine in Montreal! Tons of options, absolutely delicious - I had hot peppers and guac on mine, and let me tell you - wish I could eat it now! The atmosphere is fun too - colorful, lively yet relaxed, kind servers, love the branches on the... More

Pretty standard menu of tasty poutines, nothing too crazy like you would find during poutine week. Minimal service, crowded place, if you know that's what you're getting into you'll be fine.

This is a restaurant that focuses on Poutine, a unique Montreal food dish consisting of fries, gravy and cheese curds. Banquise serves it up in many different ways and even allows the substitution of the gravy and cheese curds for other items. Place also serves warm comfort foods like hamburgers, hotdogs that are affordable in a city as expensive as... More

Well after waiting for one hour, we finally got in! We were so excited to try one of the 20 something choices. We loved our poutine. It was way too much. Unfortunately, my daughter found a hair in her poutine. Most of us were done by that time. Great place!

La Banquise is by far the most touristic restaurant to try the provincial speciality of Québec, namely the poutine (nothing to do with the Russian president). It’s quite good indeed and the broad choice of poutine is amazing. However, it might be a little overrated knowing that it’s possible to find the same quality or even better in the area.... More

I am an out of towner who travels to Montreal quite often. I have sometimes heard that La Banquise is a staple, and so I have given it several tries. However, every time I have been they have shown themselves very disrespectful, most notably towards non-locals. They seem to ride their high horse and do not much care for any... More

Montreal is known for its typical potatoe dish: The Poutine! La Banquise offers the most variety of poutines, it is very good and not expensive at all. I personally go for the classic version but I have tried others when I was there. It is not a romantic spot but if you are game to try something different, you have... More

While the 20 minute wait outside in the cold wasn't great, the food inside was definitely worth it! Huge menu, offered in English or French, with vegetarian and vegan options for anyone who needs it. The maple syrup cola was also delicous! Staff were polite and fairly attentive, especially considering how busy the restaurant was, and the food didn't take... More

Not worth the trek and the wait in line, in my opinion. Took forever to have our order taken since they're so busy, and availability of any waitress service after that was minimal at best. One poutine was decent, with some meats including a merguez sausage which gave it some zest. Other one with peppers and bacon was pretty soggy... More

Staying in Le Plateau Mont-Royal

Neighbourhood Profile
Le Plateau Mont-Royal
Go native in Plateau Mont-Royal, where bespoke shopping, hip eateries, and wacky paint jobs attract locals and transplants alike, making it one of the city's most diverse and distinctly authentic experiences. A creative hub, Montreal's artistic elite pack the cafes along Rue Saint-Denis, where young painters and fashion designers draw inspiration from the playful murals and stately Victorian homes that dot the Plateau's side streets. Not a major sightseeing destination, a visit to Plateau Mont-Royal allows you to enjoy a local perspective, soaking in indie films, latte art, contemporary galleries, and the city's best bagels. A center of polyglot culture, Québécois accents mingle with shades of Portuguese, Greek, and Hebrew in the area's iconic Mile End district, where restaurants straddle chic designer boutiques, serving up chorizo and caldo verde. Friendliest to those on foot, it's a jungle of colourful awnings and sidewalk umbrellas, pedestrian walks and luxury shopping.
