Amazing local pub full of friendlies service and atmosphere was first class and food was exceptional all freshly cooked and fish freshly landed same day. No critiscism whatsoever. Highly recommend very reasonable prices for drinks and food - most importantly we will be returning.;

* UPDATE 21.06.2022 *** We enjoyed a delicious lunch today. We had taken the precaution of booking a table and after being greeted by friendly bar staff, we sat down with drinks and a varied menu. This is definitely the place to go for anything crab related as there were lots of choices but we chose scampi with fries and a cheese & chutney sandwich. The scampi was cooked to perfection and the chips were chunky, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The sandwich was served with a colourful and crunchy salad. We finished with a scoop of ice cream each which was refreshing and light. It was very reasonable (under £23) and I was asked if I would like to include £1 donation to the Fisherman’s Mission, a very worthy charity which has actually assisted several of our friends over the years. Looking forward to returning soon.
What an amazing job Neeve and Richard have done since taking on the Red Lion. It's clean and fresh, the bar staff are friendly, knowledgeable and efficient and there's a great selection of drinks, including cocktails. They have organised several events including live music and quizzes which have been well attended. It retains a village pub atmosphere with a jukebox and pool table, while serving absolutely delicious food. Some pubs feel as though they have turned into restaurants that serve alcohol but The Red manages to successfully juggle the perfect balance. The back garden has had some serious hard work put into it and there are benches at the front if you want to enjoy stunning views across Newlyn Harbour and Mounts Bay. I would thoroughly recommend this lovely pub.

Saw this pub on the way to Mousehole and decided to pop in on the way back. Glad we did! Great little pub, welcoming and friendly staff, good range of drinks, nice view and the Crab Soup was outrageously good. The baguettes were filled with hand cut quality local ham and the prices were really reasonable. Well done Red Lon. Fantastic place… we will be back.

Our food arrived approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes after ordering, on our pre booked table, and after my husband went to speak to the manager and asked if we had been forgotten.
The manager said she would go and speak to kitchen staff but did not explain to us what had happened or when our food would arrive. No apology whatsoever. 15 more minutes passed before our food arrived The mayonnaise I requested did not arrive until
the meal was almost finished.
We have eaten here many times and the food is good.
Service today dreadful.
An apology and perhaps an offer to allow us one free drink which we purchased whilst waiting would have helped, as would communicating with us.
£41.50 we won’t be returning for some time

We went in on the off chance and we were warmly greeted. The food arrived very quickly and the meal was fresh and delicious. The fish in particular was very fresh and had a lovely taste. The service was perfect and we were looked after very well checking that everything was to our satisfaction. We'll worth a visit if in the town on a visit!!

You have to come here for the crab soup, it is the best ever! They offer two sizes, the larger size is enough for 2 people to share for a light lunch. It comes with a side of garlic bread which is also very tasty. Staff are friendly and it is a must for the crab soup if you are near Newlyn

four young girls behind the bar, no clue what they were doing. Sat us at a table they said was needed again at 8pm, (we arrived at 6 and were fine with that). 5 or 10 mins after our food was served, one of the girls told us they needed the table back at 730 and we'd need to vacate the table at 720 - we could move if we wanted. Where to? If a pub wants to advertise itself as a restaurant as well as a traditional pub it needs to welcome both types of customer.
I have never seen such rude, immature, poorly managed and aggressive staff. I've lived here for over 30 years and eaten here often but never with such a negative experience. They'd clearly made a double booking which in itself I wouldn't mind. But there is no excuse to rush a family who are spending money on a meal out and then be rude.
I have nothing against a pub being noisy and informal but all customers need to be treated with respect.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing meal out. Very small portions too.

We have been to the Red Lion numerous times, after a lovely walk from Penzance it is great to stop for a drink and lunch. It is a small, character pub right on the harbour. The staff are friendly and the food, produced in a kitchen the size of a cupboard, is exceptional, especially the salads. I highly recommend this pub.

Having driven past daily to/from our our holiday accommodation and seen the board outside offering Newlyn Crab Soup it just had to be done. I was not disappointed, the soup was full of crab meat served piping hot and altogether very tasty. My husband had the white crab sandwich. Glorious food, a lovely welcoming and friendly staff, happy to accommodate us and our dog.

We went as the reviews said that it was a nice pub and good food. However when we arrived we got sat on a table behind a really noise table of lads. The bar staff could tell we weren’t enjoying it so offered us another table just across from ours away from them. We ordered our food and drinks, the drinks arrived and then we waited about 45-60 minutes for our starters to arrived. We ordered the calamari to share and it was 3 squid rings!!! It was good food but god the wait was unbelievable. They took our starters and time passed and we were like where are our mains so we asked this girl who checked and she apologised for the wait and blamed the wait on because we had starters and there was another big table which was a table of 4, she also said that the kitchen is small which if their kitchen is too small to cater for 3 tables then don’t have a restaurant in the pub! So she offered if she could get us anything else but we just wanted our food at this point. So we said that’s fine and waited another 20 minutes. The group of lads food came out but then we were like where is ours surly it’s nearly ready. So we went to the bar as we had had enough and said look we don’t want to wait any longer can we just pay for what we have had and go and the bar lady said just check if the food is ready so they did and she came back and said it’s nowhere near ready! So we paid for what we had and they didn’t take anything off the bill which isn't great customer service as we had to wait nearly 2 hours to have 3 rings of calamari! Then the bar lady said the Chinese down the road is good, not caring that we had had such a bad time! she just acted the whole time we were there as if they didn’t care. The whole time we were sat there the 2 bar girls just focused on this table of lads the whole time and didn’t bothered to ask us if we were okay or even to say sorry about the wait on the food. They just ignored us the whole time, during this time the 2 bar girls got given a bowl of chips and stood at the bar and ate them whilst their customers were waiting for their food that they ordered and were going to pay for! It was the worst place we have been to and it really ruined our day. We ended up getting a Macdonald’s when we left as we were so fed up and hungry it was 9:30pm by the time we ate our tea, we got to the pub at 7:15pm! Absolute joke and their staff were awful and very selfish and didn’t care about anyone else part from this table of 5 lads!!!!

Sorry to say this was terrible. The crab soup arrived as we were told 25 minutes after we placed the order. It was really good. We then waited and waited for the main course. The atmosphere in the pub was not good with the ladlady telling off the staff several times and infront of the customers. We asked what was happening with our main course several times and eventually after an hour I said serve it now or bring me the bill and we will leave. The landlady said i should come and see how small her kitchen was and how busy she was and I said that is not my problem you had better bring me the bill and she said she did not care and we could f......ing leave. So we did .

Rolled out of our accommodation to this pub, went in a few times and enjoyed every minute of it. We went on a Saturday and listened to the live band, the atmosphere was great and the staff very helpful, an amazing night, we went back for my birthday meal on the Monday and again, an amazing night, the staff had gone out their way to make my birthday meal special and the food was faultless, no plate had left overs..... I'd highly recommend this quaint pub and shall be visiting again whilst still here

Staff nice
Food good
Wait far too long for the food to arrive.
It’s definitely a pub that serves food. They do well out of a very small kitchen but waiting 90 minutes for our food was too much.

The Red Lion is set a little distance from the town centre but the walk past Newlyn's expansive harbour and various fish mongers gets you excited for the fresh and delicious seafood ahead!
The staff are really friendly and accommodating and the location is fantastic! The beer garden is set on a raised vantage point with incredible views across the harbour, Penzance and St Micheal's Mount.
To start we ordered the white bait and the famous newlyn crab soup, which far exceeded our expectations as the produce was incredibley fresh (straight from the sea) and prepared to order - also the portions were extremely generous.
With our stomachs already happy and getting near to full we moved onto the mains. Although there was a slight wait, this was ideal for us as it gave us time to get hungry again!
For our main course we had the crab cake and 'fish of the day', which was the moby dick of pollocks. We chose to have the Pollock battered with chips and garden peas and it was honestly one of the best fish and chips we have had (and we have had many). The batter was crunchy and the fish delicate, flaky and fresh.
Our only suggestion is a warning to ourselves and others not to over order!
We will definitely be returning, and would recommend this charming gastro pub to everyone, especially seafood lovers!
