Stopped in by chance after a lovely walk around the reservoir. Friendly staff, lovely food and a little outside courtyard to sit in the sun.

We've been 3 times now. The second time was to preview it for coffee and to preview it for a cycle ride lunch. The mocha was probably the best I've ever had and we had to go back because we were too busy talking to the staff to remember to pay and had to go back! When we booked the... More

We did a quick stop on way to the church graveyard and was pleasantly glad we did. The customer service and food was great, well priced and served quickly. Great coffee too! As my family history was in the town from the late 1700's, it was nice that the had printed out a page of the history of the building... More

First visit here and very impressed. Food was very good and the building and decor are lovely. However, best bit is the staff. I arrived late in the day with my elderly father who walks with a stick. They found us a table downstairs and really made a fuss of my dad. As we were leaving the manager gave us... More

We are delighted that you had such an enjoyable visit to The Almshouse and pleased that we had a table available that suited your dad. We look forward to seeing you again soon ... If the Great British weather allows you could even opt for booking a table in the courtyard next time ... it is a real sun trap! More

Lovely comfortable surroundings and a lovely warm and friendly feel. Varied menu. Great service. An enjoyable time. My Brie and bacon panini was delicious and presented nicely with salad, coleslaw and crisps. My husband enjoyed his 2 scone cream tea, but would have liked a choice of scones, which is the ONLY reason we have awarded very good and not... More

Many thanks for taking the time to review The Almshouse. We are delighted that you enjoyed your food selection and do understand that some customers would like fruited scones or cheese scones. Last summer we offered both of these options and found that there was some demand for them but most customers still preferred plain scones. If you were planning... More

Having just visited Cheddar we stopped off at Axbridge to visit the King John's Hunting Lodge and fancied a cream tea. We spotted this cafe. We are so glad we decided to give it a try as the scones were amongst the best we have tried and the service was excellent, friendly and efficient. Well worth a visit.

Just had a wonderful lunch at The Almshouse; beautiful food at very reasonable prices, superb coffee and first class service with a smile. Free sausage for a grateful dog was the icing on the cake ( we bought a lemon drizzle to bring home and it was great too. )

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the Tea Shop. The doggy sausages are very popular ... our wonderful family butcher in Wells can't make them quick enough! We hope you will be back soon ... if only to try another of our takeaway cakes. More

Think all the reviews state what a lovely place this is to visit. We too very much enjoyed coffee and cake plus the gluten free cake which was delicious. Our children and little puppy were given a warm welcome and shown where the games and colouring were. Fantastic customer service throughout! A great find in this medieval town!

We stopped for refreshments after a family walk in the Mendips. The coffee, sandwiches, and cakes were very good and in particular the carrot cake. The staff were very friendly and helpful, bringing a high chair outside for the baby and giving the dog a sausage.

Super service, super clean, super tasty food. The building is quirky and full of history, the service is attentive and friendly and the Afternoon teas are excellent. I recommend booking if you want to be sure of getting in at lunch times, and if you want the afternoon tea then at least 24hrs notice is required!

Description
Our small, family run business is set in an original 15th Century Almshouse which is full of character and atmosphere. It is a relaxing place to enjoy everything from a simple cuppa to breakfast, through lunch to afternoon tea. During fair weather our secluded courtyard garden is a must see and now with seating available in The Square it is a wonderful spot to watch the world go by. The small town of Axbridge is found at the foot of The Mendip Hills at the edge of the Somerset Levels. It is just two miles from the much better known village of Cheddar with it's famous Gorge, cheese and caves. Axbridge is particularly popular with walkers & cyclists as The Strawberry Line runs through it's Medieval Square and we are dog and child friendly.
We hope to see you soon.
