About
Our small, family run business is set in an original 15th Century Almshouse which is full of character and atmosphere. It is a relaxing place to enjoy everything from a simple cuppa, through lunch to cakes, scones and Afternoon Tea. During fair weather our secluded courtyard garden is a must see and now with seating available in The Square it is a wonderful spot to watch the world go by. The small town of Axbridge is found at the foot of The Mendip Hills at the edge of the Somerset Levels. It is just two miles from the much better known village of Cheddar with it's famous Gorge, cheese and caves. Axbridge is particularly popular with walkers & cyclists as The Strawberry Line runs through it's

We were looking for somewhere nice to stop for lunch whilst on the way to Ilminster and found The Almshouse Tea Shop on Google. Highly recommended, I phoned to see if we needed to book a table, as we were only 20 minutes away, and...the lady who picked up the phone (the owner?) was super friendly & helpful. When we arrived we found a table outside (we were told there was no need to book - this time) and as the tea shop is set in the historical market square, the views of the buildings surrounding us were beautiful. I went inside and ordered a sausage roll & salad and also a cheese & red onion scone, plus a some cakes. Everything was absolutely delicious! The lady who brought our food out was the same lady I spoke to on the phone and again, she was super helpful. She told us about the Axbridge Heritage Trail which we will definitely try next time. Would strongly recommend The Almshouse Tea Shop and intend to visit again upon our return journey in a few days!More

Fabulous old building just off the square in Axbridge. We were lucky enough to get a table for lunch & had drinks & quiche after a couple of laps of the reservoir. My friend considers herself a hot chocolate connoisseur & she said it was...one of the best hot chocolates she has had (I think it was Belgian chocolate). The quiche & salad was lovely and we took some slices of the homemade cherry bakewell home with us. All lovely but the staff especially were friendly & welcoming. I also noticed dog's were welcome.More

Prices on the menu(s) on the tables out front are out of date it seems as when we paid we were charged more as the menu behind the counter states different/increased prices. The law makes it illegal for businesses to mislead you about the price...of an item(s) hence the score here, while ATS choose to stick to their story rather than refund the difference (the pricing on the table menu). In addition the coffee was disappointing.More

We were on our way home from holiday, and stopped in Axbridge to look for lunch. We weren't sure that the Almshouse was any more than a tea shop, but we went inside and were impressed by the scope (and reasonable pricing) of the menu....Sitting outside in the sunlit courtyard, where the old stone walls create a marvellous backdrop for the abundant flowers (obviously well tended), was pleasant, but the universal friendliness of everyone on the staff was even better. The food was great, fresh and generous (I've never seen such thick slices of bread, or so much brie and cranberry stuffed between them); the cakes were home made, or so it seemed, and crumbly and moist. They were busy, but unflappable, and service was prompt and thoughtful. We'll be back before too long.More

We passed though Axebridge and dropped in here to buy some second hand books. The food looked great so a few days later we went back for lunch and afternoon tea; it was delicious. We sat upstairs where it was cooler, and ordered soup, sausage...roll, cheese sandwich and Brie and cranberry sandwich with various drinks which were made fresh to order and delivered in a timely manner. All food and drink was delicious. Stayed on for scones, jam and clotted cream which were fresh from the oven and also delicious. Lastly, took some cake back to our holiday let for later. We all agreed the homemade cakes were also fantastic. There’s not that much to do in Axebridge. The car park is only 2 hours (and they do put penalty notices on the cars as we saw), the museum will only take 30/40 mins to go around so use the rest of the time here, eating cake.More

Hi, this is more of a tea room, than a restaurant, but they do accommodate veggie options, such as cheese toasties etc...I dont think they do Sunday lunches...sorry
