The building is very unique with lots of history and offers a different kind of experience we were eager to try out. The restaurant, however, still has to iron out some wrinkles after ownership/management has changed. There is no liquor license (even though the sign outside said otherwise), payment in cash only - and the menu has changed. We were... More

Excellent food, nice seafood chowder, loved the berry crumble, loved the atmosphere. And the nearby root cellar!

We came to Elliston for the day to see the puffins. Having driven from St John's, we were hungry when we arrived, and a quick search on Trip Advisor revealed Nanny's Root Cellar Kitchen. We stopped by, and were delighted with what we found. Service was very warm and friendly. My wife had the fish & brewis with molasses, and... More

Had the best fish cakes with mashed potatoes and salad there! Highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the area.

We wanted something "different" and "authentic"....not designer soups or salads and this was perfect. We finally were able to taste the "fish and brewis" and "cod tongues" that we'd read about and they were both great! Our server, who has been there for five years, suggested going easy on the molasses that's served with the fish and brewis. Great suggestion.... More

The pea soup and partridgeberry crisp were fabulous. Make sure you bring cash; they cannot accept other forms of payment.

We stopped here for lunch after seeing the puffins on our way to Bonavista. Yes, they only take cash and even though the sign out front says "licensed" - they are not. The food is not inexpensive, but it is homemade and quite toothsome. Wife had chowder ( it was very good) and a large salad (the first veggies in... More

In a former Orange Hall, easy walk from anywhere in Elliston. Nice service, we both had excellent chowder and patridgeberry crumble, along with other good Newfoundland dishes. If you're staying in Elliston or nearby, definitely worth visiting.

Lunch in this restaurant was different than expected. Its not in a root cellar but a former Orange Hall. Standard Newfoundland seafood, well cooked but we found a tad expensive for lunch.

We arrived to find out they only accepted cash - 'today' - a hand-written sign at the entrance informed us. We had heard from others at our B&B that the day before they'd had the same experience so clearly it wasn't just 'today'. We went to the local convenience store where they charged us 10% to do cash-back on our... More
