After trying to get in somewhere else down river and not wanting to wait as long, we thought we'd chance this pub which I'd been meaning to try for a long time. Beautiful interior, absolutely riddled with character, and a really homely feel. Quick service, good food, proper home cooked size portions too! No scrimping on that! Also had local... More

Having eaten here three times I can say the food is consistently good and the soups excellent. Traditional pub food on the menu. I had the mince/veg pie which was fab, may have been a tad salty for some but I loved it, full of flavour and perfect pastry. Portions are great. My partners burger was described as only ok... More

Had a lovely afternoon again in the Bear in front of there roaring open fire. Great burger as usual and a great choice of bitters. A true pub where everyone is welcome, children, dogs, and united supporters. The only low point always an ignorant customer making a drama out of a minor issue which the staff dealt with very professionally... More

Came here back in December after visiting the Christmas markets in Chester and the food was great! Had been here before for just drinks but never food so didn't know what to expect. The roast dinners were really good and you can tell they are made fresh. All the other food we had was also lovely. Will definitely visit again... More

I had the Gammon must I say it was splendid, I heard the Nachos were to die for! Great large portions so very good value for money. However, the woman who appeared to be the manageress was quite rude and abrupt, other staff seemed to be rushed off their feet. We shall be returning!

We visited Chester for Xmas shopping. We went looking for a nice old pub for real ale, nice food and an open fire.We found it all in this pub. Roaring fire, great pub food and lovely real ale. The young barman was one of the friendliest staff we have met and he was a credit to the pub.The toilets were... More

This is our second visit here for our work Christmas meal. We visited 3 years ago and had a lovely meal, this year's meal was the same. Lovely meal, great choice of real ales and great atmosphere. Food was served hot. Roast potatoes tasted freshly cooked and were crispy, turkey cooked perfect and veg was tasty and not overcooked. Overall,... More

I think you an tell how good somewhere is by the burgers. It's often over looked and some times little effort it put in. There are quite a few places in Chester selling burgers But I think the bear and billet serve a great burger. I have only had the classic, but it's a good size. Well prepared with bacon,... More

This is a really friendly pub selling real ales and good food. For those interested in football they have numerous rooms were they can show more than one match. I had one of the burgers from the menu which was homemade and delicious.
