I think it's time I did a review for our favourite pub in Penzance. During an impromptu trip to Cornwall in 2011 we found this place & enjoyed some lovely meals, so on returning in 2015 we headed back and found it exactly the same, friendly, welcoming place serving excellent food, that's why we return every July!!  We eat out at other places during our stay and enjoy some good meals but this place is always top of our list. Always a good atmosphere, lovely staff (many familiar faces every year so the boss must be great to work for!!), a mouth watering menu and Cornish Rattler cider on draught..perfect! Even in the very busiest times service is swift & smooth flowing and customers are always well looked after. Things may be a little different this year due to Covid restrictions but all procedures are in place & being followed to the letter and the new 'normal' is working perfectly. Whatever they're doing here should be cloned & bottled and used as a benchmark for the whole industry because THIS is how you do good food & hospitality!

We come across this ale house on the edge off the harbour, it has both inside and outside seating which in all areas is extremely clean and tidy. We had a late Sunday lunch as a Faimily, the roast was excellent the wife said, the crab salad with new potatoes was filling and very nice, the crab mac & cheese was also great and large and we can also recommend the sizzler dishes. The pub is extreamly well run, great staff and very, very clean. It also has on suit rooms. All I can say it the experience was great in these difficult times. You can book inside or just turn up outside. Well done team

With very few restaurants accepting non-reservation walk-ins, we came here based on our hotel recommendation. Whilst there was no table immediately available, we did not have to wait long before we were shown to a large table in a cosy lounge area. Orders were quickly placed with the friendly staff and after a short while the meals were delivered. Nothing fancy, just really good “pub grub” – a plate of excellent Chilli and another plate of tasty ribs and fries. A great meal in a nice pub - if we are ever in Falmouth again we will definitely return.

After reading the trip advisor reviews I booked in easily. We turned up an hour early and we were seated. The pub is what you expect. We started by ordering drinks and starters - ribs and garlic bread with cheese and advised we would order mains in a bit. The starters came and the ribs were tiny for the price there also wasn't much sauce although they were tender. The garlic bread portion although huge had so much cheese on it the cheese was stodgy and not stringy. The bread was just over powered we took cheese off to eat it and left a whole slice. No one come to take our plates or main order until I popped my head round and asked a member of staff to order. I went for the special steak and ale pie and my partner the rump steak. The pie flavour was nice and lots of it but the puff pastry just sat on top. Could have easily been done in a pie dish. My partners steak was okay, it wasn't the most seasoned so the sauce was needed. Overall we wasn't impressed and we love a bit of pub grub, glad to have had the eat out to help out given the quality.

The service was excellent, everyone was so friendly and helpful. The outside area was clean but inside did feel a little grubby. The food was quite expensive for what you got, after ordering a mac & cheese and a lasange, within 2 minutes of ordering they were already on our table piping hot, premade then microwaved maybe? Would come back for drinks & chill but not food.

My wife and I visited on Monday 24th August for an evening meal. The food was fine for “pub grub”. Our starter was served soon after ordering but then we waited for almost an hour for our main course. Upon booking we were advised that our options were 18:30 or 20:30hrs. At 20:27hrs an authoritative gentleman approached me whilst my wife was at the bathroom to advise me that they required the table for another booking at 20:30hrs. I explained that there had been an exceptional delay in serving our main course which resulted in us having not long finished eating to be greeted with the response that”...these are different times to normal”. We will not be returning and couldn’t recommend this establishment following our experience.

Visited here a couple of times whilst on holiday. Staff are very efficient and polite and the pub is dog friendly (they were really great with our staffy). We ate on one of the nights and both ordered steaks which were cooked to perfection ! Really nice food - highly recommend.

Excellent location for before and after our visit to isles of Scilly. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We had breakfast and dinner, both of which we're lovely. Only 3 rooms available at this establishment but this made it better for guests as the delicious breakfast was served very quickly. All 3 rooms are bright, clean and comfortable . I would highly recommend this lovely little tavern.

A great pub with fantastic staff. There are many tables outside and the ordering was very efficient with table service. My husband and son were very impressed with their meals; fish and chips and lobster chunks. Both meals were very generous portions. My nachos were a tad strange as they were served with a sweet chilli sauce not the usual salsa I was expecting, but I enjoyed regardless. The price was a little high but we all enjoyed so would definitely recommend.

The pub as usual is warm, cosy, lovely space. Unfortunately the fish batter and fish quality was poor, the batter was dark brown, great which I've been told is not fresh, a buy in from.chadds from a publican friend who had same problem. The adult meal with oven chips waS 14 pounds the child size for mum was 6.50 my sons macaroni wasn't nice..cost 14 pounds wine medium 7.00 pounds. No value for money this visit 2/10.

We called in here for a pre dinner drink and despite the other pubs in Penzance being busy, this pub was eerily quiet. Just another couple of couples dining. The guy behind the bar seemed confused that we just wanted drinks, then even more confused that we didn’t have smartphones! We explained that we only wanted one drink and he agreed to serve us without the need to order over an app. We did notice that the food here seemed to be very expensive for the setting. I would expect to pay these prices in a higher end fish restaurant. Perhaps that’s why it was quite quiet. Our experience was fine but I wouldn’t rush back when next in the area.

As locals we have eat here several times and always been very pleased with the food . Tonight whilst the staff and service was excellent the food was not up to its usual standard. My steak was tough and chips were limp and obviously frozen. My husband had grapes on his salad . The lemon cheesecake has vanished from the menu and poor selection to choose from my husband had the mousse and it was a very small portion as was the brownie. We had 3 mains 2 desserts and 2 pints of cider which came to £79 . Very disappointed local customers , came home hungry and annoyed I’d spent the equivalent of a week’s groceries on one meal , not the usual standard we had come to expect from the dolphin .

A very popular place in Penzance, good idea to book especially in the summer. All the food, and they've a good varied menu including a specials board, is good, fresh, local (as far as possible) hot, well presented and very tasty. Great staff, always smiling and the owner is brilliant, very welcoming and accomadating. Large portions, good choices, great atmospher, good drinks menu. A really great place for a snack, meal or just a drink.

Enjoyed my first visit to this lovely, quaint tavern. The staff were friendly, welcoming us the second we walked through the door. There were plenty of drinks options available and the menu was plentiful. The food came quickly too. I had a delicious herb crusted fillet of hake served on a bed of mash with Parma ham and cherry tomatoes. Very filling and incredibly tasty! I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Penzance.

We were staying in Penzance for three nights and went here on the first night on the recommendation of the B&B owner where we were staying as it was dog friendly. Not disappointed as the staff were very friendly and helpful and the quality of the food and drinks was excellent. It was very busy (almost full) but the three front of house staff were very attentive and quick meaning you never had to wait long to be served with food or drinks. We were so impressed we went back again two nights later and it was still busy, with three different front of house staff on but the service was just as good and efficient. Well done to the owner/manager your staff are a credit to the venue.
