Best fish and chips in Penzance!

We were down in Penzance working last week and wanted to sample some local fish and chips (it's the thing to do when you visit the seaside after all!) This chippy was a little out of the way and further from us than some others but on the recommendation of our local colleagues we decided to give it a try, which had the added bonus of taking us on a lovely walk through Penzance as well. We ended up not only having a chippy tea from there that night, but also a second night last week. The food here is absolutely phenomenal - fish and chips like they used to make them, as my dad would say. Everything is cooked fresh to order so it isn't super fast, but the staff are all incredibly friendly and we whiled away the time chatting to the lady behind the counter while our food was cooked. The fish is fresh and was perfectly cooked, flaky and delicious when with just the right amount of batter for a nice crisp crunch that complements rather than overwhelms the flavours; I could eat their chips all day, beautiful chunky perfect chips fried to exactly the right point to get them slightly crisp on the outside and gorgeous and fluffy in the middle. There is a little restaurant space available if you prefer to eat in but as we were collecting food for others as well we took it back with us; the food was so fresh that it stayed hot all the way home. The restaurant looks like a nice little space, no frills but who needs frills when the food is this good? Definitely give this place a try next time you're in Penzance - I promise you won't regret it!

What a gem.

Visited here as we'd recently visited a chippy round the corner which had won awards for their food but was overwhelmingly disappointed on the price. Immediately received a pleasant welcome from the staff and a reasonable pricing structure for the menu, not as expensive as other chip shops in the area. Once ordered, it was a good wait before our order was ready, in part due to the number of customers waiting, but this was no bother as it's normally a good sign at a chippy and indicated that the fish had been cooked to order. We weren't disappointed, very tasty, nice crispy batter and the fish was handsome too! Chips were perfectly cooked and just what we liked. No hesitation on recommending this place in Penzance.

Really Friendly Staff

Went here because they had good trip advisor reviews and they definitely delivered. We got a fair bit of food for a decent price, it was all really tasty. The staff were really friendly and gave us some great insider tips for the area.

Best fish and chip place around

I've been a regular for several years, and I can say without hesitation they serve the best cod and chips ever, great big portions too. They take orders over the phone too. I've been in PZ on and off for 40 years so I guess I'm a kind of expert.

Poor quality & NOT value for money.

The Pirates Rest was recommended to us, so we went on a Friday afternoon, shortly after they had opened for the evening session. When we got home we found that the chips looked like they had been left over from the lunchtime session, the batter on the cod was almost non existent and the fish quality was poor. We will not go there again if we visit Penzance again.

Hi NeilF150, Very sorry to hear of your experience. I can assure you we do not hold any food over from a lunchtime session. All our food is cooked to order, as was yours on this evening. Your comment on the batter, well this can be construde as personal taste, we tend to coat with a thin layer of batter rather than more batter less fish. The quality of our fish is of high standard as are all of our products as we use high quality ingredients. Maybe a phonecall or returning would have been a better way to resolve, however the keyboard seems to be a better friend to people these days. Once again sorry for your personal experience. Nice fish and chips

Nice fish and chip shop, opened on time and made most welcome. We chose to eat in, had small fish and chips which was a generous portion, very nice fish, and chips nicely cooked. Nice friendly staff and very clean. Will definitely go back again.

Superb Takeaway

We were on holiday in Penzance this time last year and enjoyed our fish 'n chips from The Pirates Rest, so we returned this year while on holiday again in Cornwall. I have to say the quality is superb, fresh and tasty cod in light crispy batter with excellent chips, not at all stodgy or greasy. We enjoyed them sitting on a promenade bench. I think this is one of the best takeaways we've ever had, and at a reasonable price. They also have a small cafe if you prefer to eat in. We will definitely go to The Pirates Rest next time we're in Penzance.

Best fish and chips in Penzance

We have been going to this fish and chip shop for years , every time we visit Penzance and we have never been disappointed. Freshly cooked produce, huge portions and friendly staff. We hadn't been for 4 years but nothing had changed it was as lovely as always and massive portions. Highly recommended!

Lovely chips

We came on a busy day so were unable to have Gluten free Fish. Just chips are gluten free. Because the frier will be used for gluten items. I do find this very disappointing. If you're Gluten free it isn't because its not busy. Please consider this when visiting. Other family were very pleased with their fish and chips.

I'm sorry you feel let down. Unfortunately we were even busier than normal due to another fish and chip shop nearby having to shut down. This was explained to you, we also said we could do the gluten free however it would be about a half hour wait. Please I would ask you to consider rewording your review as we in no way use our gluten free pan for other gluten products. It was simply the demand for chips we would have struggled with if we had taken the pan out of action to fry a piece of gluten free fish. We follow all duidlines to make sure of no cross contamination. Also, for the rest of your family as you say enjoyed them, to score us so harshly is disappointing. Once again we apologise to you for being unable to give you the service you wanted. Hopefully we can rectify this if you visit again. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Penzance.

Friendly service, food cooked to order. Great fish n chips & good portions. Staying in Chapel st, literally a 5 minute walk down a lane opposite the Admiral Benbow. Excellent grub. Highly recommended!

Does not disappoint

Establishment is clean and orderly; wait staff were prompt, polite and engaging; food was quick, hot, fresh and tasty. We will eat here again and recommend it to all. The cod was not overbattered, but was nice and crispy. Chips were perfect.

Outstanding fish and chips

One of the best fish and chip suppers I’ve ever had. Incredibly tasty and fresh and cooked to order. Best of all the fish is skinless, as it should be!
