In summary, the food was PERFECT and the service was top notch (but not stuffy). Walking in for lunch, we were greeted by a friendly hostess, our coats and bags were collected, and we were shown to a table. (I love that instead of stacking tables one on top of another they give you some distance from the other tables.)... More

Despite my negative prejudice towards Michelin-starred restaurants, "The Square" is possibly the closest match for creative and tasty food and fantastic service. The welcome was excellent with the entire team smiling and greeting; perhaps due to late booking, even the service was quite prompt with the appetizer (a trio including a cream of sweet potatoes) served almost immediately. The first... More

Not only beautifully presented, but some of the most intense flavours that I have encountered in recent times. Faultless Service. Philip Howard is truly outstanding !

I ate there when Philip Howard was head chef and I enjoyed a beautiful and elegant meal worthy of its 2 Michelin Stars. The amuse bouches were great and that was followed by 4 courses, the highlight being Turbot cooked to perfection and a slow cooked Beef dish I will remember for years. I regret not trying the tasting menu... More

People who have read my other reviews may have noticed that I have enjoyed almost everywhere I have been unless the expectations were not met or something was pretty dire. This is because my mother always impressed upon me that, if I have nothing good to say, it's better not to say anything at all. Therefore, although I have eaten... More

We had a private dinner for 10 guests. The menu looked interesting and some of the dishes such as the sugar-crusted foie gras were exceptional. However most of the other dishes were either puzzling (such as basmati ice cream and mackerel, where the mackerel had no taste and the basmati ice cream seemed just put there for the sake of... Excellent service from the moment we walked in. Was highly impressed with the someliers recommendation and knowledge. Did not disappoint. The cheese trolley left me drooling. Delicious selection of cheeses served right at the table. AMAZING!

Lunch today. A la carte. Excellent. Very solid 2* and now much more precise cuisine, better visuals, more accurate and refined tastes than during my previous visits. The chef seems to "prendre ses quartiers" now. The chef has spent years with two of France's greatest chefs for me: Alleno and Meneau (a genius with a very bad temper but what... More

We went for lunch with friends and we go to enjoy ourselves and have good food not to be over critical and leave feeling that we have wasted our money. My first visit 2 years ago was a very different experience, wonderful food and service. This time the service was disjointed and our food was bland, under seasoned and very... More

The Square restaurant in London's ultra-smart Mayfair has four right angles: great food, wines, service, and location. The dining room is a refined space where you can seal a deal, celebrate a triumph, or simply dine incredibly well. Chef Patron Philip Howard has earned a pair of Michelin stars for his unique French-inspired haute cuisine using impeccable ingredients to create dishes capable of both gossamer elegance and vivid boldness all in the same bite. Everything is superb, though we particularly recommend the herb-crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The Square's wine list (wine bible, really) runs to 80 pages of the world's finest.

Staying in Mayfair

Neighbourhood Profile
Set beside some of London's best parks and home to world-class galleries, luxurious hotels, and famed thoroughfares, the ultra upscale Mayfair is one of London's most exclusive haunts. Here the shopping is haute, the dining is exquisite, and the nightlife is vibrant. A casual stroll through the area’s chic streets will reveal that Michelin stars and chauffeured cars are practically the norm here. Even if you're on a tight budget, this exceptionally well connected swath of Central London is worth exploring, if only for the chance to take a peak at the goings on of upper crust English society.
