Went here a while back with the wife and the food was good. I love Iranian cuisine and this place certainly doesn't disappoint.

It was first time I had persian cuisine, and while this restaurant may've received mixed reviews. It certainly didn't disappoint me. It was a quiet evening and my group had a great selection of stews, kebabs and salads. Everything looked amazing and well presented. There was no issues with the taste or the texture of the meats, so I am... More

My boyfriend and I visited Gilak last night, he's been raving about it for a while but having read some of the reviews I wasn't so keen. I needn't have worried. We received a warm welcome, literally - the heating in December was well and truly on in the restaurant - and figuratively, the waiter (owner?) was kind but maintained... More

Having visited Gilak five years ago and had a lovely meal I was looking forward to going again. The experience was less than impressive and far from what I remembered. The waiter greeted us to an empty and heating-less restaurant (in mid November!). We ordered some mixed starters that were barely edible – two of which were also nearly identical... More

Possibly the worst food I have ever eaten in a restaurant in the uk or on my travels. We started with a £12 mixed starter dish for 2 - five small pots consisting of three yogurt and 2 Aubergine - no taste at all to the yogurts that were basically the same? And two mushy pots of stewed Aubergine, one... More

I liked this place as it offered a rare find: food from Caspian region in Iran. However, the ambience is very lacking (in fairness, the food is cheap so the price reflects this, hence 4 star rating). It also took me forever to get here from central London. Overall it was nice, but I won't go back next time in... More

I've been to Gilak four times over two years with family members and not been disappointed. In that time, we have sampled the range of starters grills and stews and all were appetising and well presented. I particularly like the lamb stews, cooked in pomegranate juice or sour wine with herbs. As an English person, I don't know how authentic... More

My partner visited this restaurant last night, a Saturday evening - it was empty and now we know why. The starters were very poor, lack of choice and what did arrive was unappetising - pieces of cucumber with mashed up mint; a plate of mint leaves with parsley leaves with a few chopped up radishes, feta & walnuts - no... What a fantastic find thanks to the Timeout card, which gives you 20% off here. Gilak offers authentic persian food from North Iran. Fantastic service at extremely affordable prices (even more so with the discount!) The aubergines as starters were supreme with flat bread. I highly recommend the mined lamb/chicken fillet kebab which was succulent and tender. Next up was... More

Description
Named after the people of a large Iranian province, the Gilak restaurant on Londons Holloway Road is one of the most authentic Middle Eastern dining experiences in the capital. A spacious, plainly decorated venue with little fuss or fanfare, Gilak very much concentrates on providing sumptuous food and a warm reception. The cuisine, based around the traditional dishes, produce and flavours of the Northern Iranian region of Gilan which sits on the Caspian Sea - is strong on fish and vegetarian dishes with the unusual local staple of rice served in simple, perfect style. Gilak is an affordable option for exotic, unusual dining in comfortable, friendly surroundings.
