Superb food and service. How rare in London to get a reasonably priced restaurant serving modern British food of such a high standard. Lovely atmosphere and decor. My mussels cooked saffron and leeks were the best ever and the chicken superb. Desserts very slightly disappointing but overall excellent.

This part of the south bank if the Thames use to be dead as a dodo. But the pace of rejuvenation sees the area become very gentrified. Magdalen has been here for a number of years in a rather elegant old building as these changes have gone on around it. Contrary to some other reviews the service was very good... More

Came for a business lunch and found a good environment for that. Tables reasonably well spaced and lots of fabric to reduce background noise for us deaf old guys. The service was friendly and efficient. The food was interesting, tasty and very decent value for money with a 2 course set meal for just £16.50. My host liked his crab... More

I have been to this restaurant many times but the standard has dropped. While the food was average with high prices, the service was appalling. My coat was stolen and the staff were extremely unhelpful and showed no understanding or offered any resolution. Will never go back and feel very let down.

I visited with my Husband for an early Christmas Lunch and was unsure, after reading some of the reviews. On arrival at the restaurant, before we had even taken our coats off and sat down, we were asked whether we wanted water. We didn't know we had to hang our own coats up and felt that this should have been... More

We've been before and had a knockout meal, about 18 months ago. Went again recently and it wasn't anywhere near as good. Nice menu, nice wine list, nice people looking after you and a nice dining room but the meal was just not up to the standard expected. I had venison which was leathery and took some chewing. Everything else... More

I dined with a small group of friends in the downstairs L-shaped room. Ambience was pleasant, friends chatting on the other tables, the sound level facilitating conversation. Table setting was conventional and stylish. The menu has a selection of about ten starters, ten mains + one or two specials with a few of them left when we dined at 7... More

the component parts of this place just don't quite stack up. the staff although attentive weren't really helpful - especially when asked for advice. the dishes are OK but not special when the venue promises something more. The dissonance this leaves you with causes a vague lack of fulfilment. the menu is good anglo/french fare - potted crab, soup, pheasant,... More

I have been wanting to visit this restaurant for some time and on the whole it was a tad disappointing. First things first - the menu and the food was very good especially the terrine and the fois grois pate. We also had a lovely welcome on arrival but that's the good stuff over with. We ordered pre dinner drinks... More

Hosted a team Christmas lunch here for a small group. The restaurant had a reasonable menu, while not overly extensive it had sufficient choice for everyone to find something they wanted. Also a good wine list including some higher end reds with equally high end prices, but also some quality wines at more reasonable costs. The service was friendly and... More

Staying in Southwark

Neighbourhood Profile
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.
