This is a small family run café in the center of York next to the cathedral. The place is usually crowded and there is a queue outside. It is overall a nice place but there are a couple of things you have to evaluate. The...first thing is that the quality of the pastries is ok, but nothing special. Then: Pros: Family run business; next to the center; Cons: Long queue to get a table; small portions of pastries; expensive. We are a family with three kids and we bought 5 pastries (1 slice of apple tart, 3 brownies, and 1 biscuit). Due to the crowd we had them take away and we paid £16. Honestly their price should not be above £10 also taking into consideration the small portions. In conclusion, it is a nice place but definitely overrated and quite expensive.More

Popped in for breakfast whilst away for a few days. Incredibly lucky to be shown to a table straight away as I noticed a constant queue thereafter. The service was friendly and efficient. I ordered the brioche French toast with apples raspberry and pecan nuts...and I was taken aback by the huge portion. Great price, wonderful atmosphere and would highly reccomend 😁More

Dishwasher out of order so disposable cups utensils etc but still good. The sausage rolls, croissants and pain au chocolate were excellent as were the cinnamon buns. Three slices of toast and marmalade for a very modest £3 something. Good coffee, never bought a cake...but drooled over them they looked so yummy. All made on the premises I think. Brew and Brownie was very busy so no tables such a shame as also looked really good.More

We have just returned from a 2 night stay in York. We visited Brew and Brownie on both mornings are we were so impressed! The waiting on staff were very friendly and attentive. The homemade iced tea and elderflower spritz were delicious, and perfect for...non-coffee drinkers. We had a sausage and black pudding sandwich, a hot beef sandwich with gravy, eggs royale and pancakes with bacon and maple syrup. Everything was presented nicely and the ingredient quality was superb. Service wasn’t the fastest but considering how busy the place was and the quality of the food, we did not mind the wait. We didn’t have enough room left for cake but the selection was huge and looked amazing! We will definitely be back if we ever visit York again xMore

I visited here with my husband for a mid-week breakfast. Neither of us had been before. There is no dedicated parking but it can been found just around the corner from York Minster so is very easy to get to. We got there about fifteen...minutes after it opened and there was no queue so I think we just got lucky as by the time we left, a queue had formed outside. There was a sign saying to wait outside the door to be seated, which we did, but we were just called through and told to grab a table. My husband ordered the Eggs Benedict with bacon and I ordered sourdough toast. My husband ordered a flat white and I ordered a tap water. There was a lot of staff working that day, both in the kitchen (which we could see whenever the door opened) and front of house. I guess this is because they are so busy from open until close. Despite the very small cafe and large amount of staff, we waited a LONG time for food. Over half an hour. I think that front of house staff have a responsibility to tell customers that there is a wait on food if timings are going to run to this length. Then customers can decided if to stay and wait or leave and go somewhere else. Despite the long wait for food, the waitress brought the drinks out straight away. Again, I don't like this. I think a good waitress will ask the customer if they want their drinks straight away or with their food. Because of this, the coffee was finished long before we saw any food. The coffee itself was nice and beautifully presented. However, it was the smallest flat white I've ever seen. The cup was barely bigger than a large espresso cup. The food, when it eventually came, was nice. My husband liked his. The eggs were lovely and runny. Perfectly cooked. As was the bacon. However, the amount of hollandaise was minuscule in relation to everything else on the plate. There needed to be at least double what was served ad the bread soaked that up in seconds. My toast was toast. Not much you can say really. It was slightly overdone in places but nice enough. Again, not enough butter for the amount of bread but nicely presented. The cafe itself is nicely decorated and the cakes all looked lovely. However, I didn't feel COVID safe. It is a tiny cafe, with quite a lot of tables. These tables are very close together. I had a table next to me which was so close you couldn't have moved sideways between the two tables. And to the other side of me was a bench where again, there was only just enough room to walk between. The waitress stands right next to you when taking your order, bending down towards you to hear you. The cafe is noisy and hot. Just after we sat down I commented to my husband that it was too busy and I wanted to leave. We almost left there and then but decided to stay after I moved to the corner of a table. I wish, in hindsight that we had left. There is only one toilet and they have asked you not stand outside the door and wait for it to be free as this blocks the kitchen door and would mean you would be stood over people eating next to the toilet door. However, this meant whenever someone left the toilet, half the cafe stands up to get to the toilet first! This wasn't helped by the fact a toddler was going through a toilet obsessed phase so was demanding to go to the bathroom every few minutes and despite her not needing the toilet and just wanting to walk AND having a COVID pandemic, the father obliged and was walking back and forth to the bathroom at least four times when we were in there with no mask on. We were the only couple who wore our masks when walking to and from the table, paying and going to and from the bathroom. Nobody else in the entire place bothered. I think we paid a lot for what we got. It's not a cheap breakfast option and we had much nicer breakfasts when in York (Blue Barbakan). The food was nice enough and I am not complaining about the quality at all. But I think it is overpriced for what you get, small touches need improved and COVIDwise it wasn't good at all. I would return for a takeaway cake but wouldn't sit in again.More

A visit to Leeds and found this really nice unassuming place and decided to have our breakfast there. Luckily we got a table because it soon got busy. We had a lovely breakfast, served quickly and you didn't feel rushed even though they were busy

I have visited Brew & Brownie on numerous occasions, with family and friends. The customer service is always outstanding and the food is amazing … I never come away disappointed! We’ve always queued for a table but it’s so worth the wait. If you’re a...real foodie (like me and my family) then you’ll love it!More

Few days ago me and my husband went there for a breakfast. We waited for 24 minutes to get a table. I must say it was more a show then real food on a plate. Expensive for what you get. Highly average and over rated.

Came for a takeaway. Absolutely love the homemade lemonade (ended up ordering 2). Everything is all homemade. Love the brownies. Can get very busy, so need to come early

It depends upon the weather a little but on the weekend at that time I would expect a wait. Maybe 15 -20 minutes. You could be lucky and get a table straight away. It is relatively small and given how great the food is it is... More
