Our daughter never wanted to taste chicken livers or pate, she begrudgingly tried mine and ate most of it--astonishing. The roast beef and pig platter were delicious. Can't wait to go back, an unexpected delight.

Incredible food; well chosen ingredients cooked with flair and imagination. We started with the leek, pea and goat's cheese risotto which was outstanding; then we had steak pave and lamb which were both equally superb. Finished with a very good chocolate delice and wonderful orange sorbet. It's small and unpretentious but very busy, so worth booking. Staff lovely, friendly and... More

A lovely intimate restaurant. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was outstanding. The lamb shoulder for my main was one of the best meals I've had. Lovely. 10/10. When next in York we will be back.

Its just outside the city walls, through Bootham Bar and turn right up Gillygate and there you find the lovely CAFE NO 8, we went early for a Saturday lunch. The owner Martin was as welcoming as always. I had the Butternut Squash soup and my partner had the Meatloaf Sandwich. All the food is so fresh, nurturing tasty and... More

I booked based on trip reviews. Initially all was good until they rang back to say they had overbooked. But after a few calls they managed to jiggles thinks & fit us in for requested time. First rate customer service When we arrived with our US friends I was delighted with what greeted us. The venue is cozy & comfy.... More

We visited the Merchant Adventurers hall and intended on having coffee, however the menu looked so appealing we stayed for lunch. I ordered the roast beef which came with roast potatoes, a huge Yorkshire and a good choice of vegetables. My friend ordered the Sea bass with mango salsa served with potatoes. We both enjoyed the meal immensely, well cooked,... More

This stunning little quaint and out of the way bistro was exquisite, the food, the wine, the staff. I had the belly pork and it was cooked to perfection along side its crackling, as were the vegetables and then I had their esteemed rhubarb and custard meringue desert and it was sublime. Very enjoyable and would love to go back... More

Great little bistro with a good range and meat and veggie options and every dish tasted amazing. Prices are reasonable for the quality. Couldn't fault the service and the atmosphere was really nice with plenty of space and not too many people crammed in.

Visited on a Thursday evening and booked well ahead (2weeks) and that was s good idea because it was full by 8.00pm. The food is very good indeed and reasonably priced. The wine is the same and the service both efficient and friendly: really a perfect combination. What was most impressive is that all the dishes were great - so... More

A great place on Gillygate. Recommended by our niece who lives close by. You probably would never stumble across this as a tourist, but it’s definitely worth seeking out – but you will need to book. It has the tiniest kitchen producing the most amazing quality food. We had a lovely meal, great food and service. Well worth a visit.

Description
Our small-but-beautiful bistro is found on the busy and lively Gillygate in York. A street full of independent shops and businesses, it leads right into the heart of York through one of its ancient City gates.

A traditional and cosy bistro front room that evokes the brasseries of Paris connects to a more spacious and lighter garden room at the rear. This in turn leads to our charming and secluded garden area adjoining the City Walls and basking in the glory of the fabulous York Minster. Whether you come for breakfast, for lunch, or an evening meal, the bistro provides a delightful setting for you to enjoy your meal.

Ideal for romantic couples, families or large groups, Café No.8’s bistro offers simple, modern, quality food at excellent value. Make a reservation and see why we consistently appear in ‘top places to eat’ lists both locally and nationally.
