On cobbled Hill's Lane, almost opposite the exit from the Barker St carpark, is a narrow alleyway. At the far end is the restaurant entrance. The restaurant is down in the cellars of one of the above ground buildings. Descending down the steps, it is at this point you are transported from Shrewsbury to small town Italy. The ambience is perfectly balanced between the absolutely essential Italian flags, images of Italy, shrines to football and Ferrari's, and the no nonsense bare brick arched ceilings and red quarry tiled floors of a rural kitchen, giving you the subconscious sensation that these people, while proud of their heritage, are also serious about the reason we're here, the food.
We started with some garlic bruschetta and olives as we perused the menu. The menu isn't huge and rightly so. Many restaurants have page after page and end up over-stretching themselves, leading to a big drop in quality. There was no chance of that happening here, but it was still a task to choose, as everything sounded so tempting and delicious (even writing this now is making my mouth water.) In the end I went for spicy chicken livers as a starter which was so good, I could have eaten it again as a main course. As it was I had a seafood spaghetti - cooked to perfection. My wife had grilled herbed mushrooms followed by a slow cooked beef stew with bread dumplings. These were helped on their way by a reasonably priced bottle of rather good well chilled sauvignon We skipped the delightful sounding desserts, as we were pretty full by now. By the time we left we had polished off the last of the wine, we had decided that we were totally impressed with the whole package. In fact we considered not telling anyone about the restaurant, because when you find something as good as this you want to keep it a secret, just for you. But that would not be fair on the owners who have (and continue to) work hard to make your visit so memorable and they deserve every success......Just don't tell everyone.

Went to Osteria last night and the food was AMAZING. waitresses were brilliant, the Chef came to shave some fresh truffle on our meals (just flown in from Italy) - worth every penny. The restaurant was spotless, all safety measures in place, properly distanced tables and even took our temperature before letting us into the restaurant. A fantastic night with great food in a safe environment! 5*

My husband and I had a wonderful evening at Osteria da Paolo. We had no idea what to expect as it was our first time there and having only read the many good reviews had no other way of knowing what to expect? It was wonderful!
As we had quite an early evening booking the restaurant was quiet when we arrived but soon started filling up and getting a good ambience. The staff were very friendly and attentive and gave us enough time to make our choices without seeming rushed. The waitresses were very informing and helpful when we asked them questions regarding the food/menu and even suggested we take a smaller portion with one of the dishes as it was a good sized portion, which we really appreciated. The food arrived in very good time, was very well presented and delicious, full of flavour! My absolute favourite was the gnocchi mushroom starter and the double chocolate truffle with a side of pistachios ice cream! To die for!!
My husband has travelled to Italy a lot and says that it is a very authentic Italian restaurant. We both loved it very much! Thank you Osteria for a great experience 👍🏻

We used to visit Paolo's quite regularly but hadn't been for a while so when our relatives came to stay for the weekend we decided to revisit confident that we would be well fed & reasonably priced.
I think Paolo's now has new management and to be honest not for the better, part of the Paolo's experience used to be the waiter memorising a quite extensive specials offering, that has now gone, the menu is considerably smaller, the portions are alot smaller and the prices very much larger, £13.50 for a small bowl of pasta is in my opinion overpriced.
I must say that what we had was very well presented and delicious, I was expecting maybe a side of garlic bread or vegetables like they used to do back in the good old days but alas that has gone too.
I'm sorry that this is a rather negative review but I feel the new Paolo's is a bit of an overpriced disappointment and I doubt I will return.

We only tend to eat out together when abroad (in Italy) and we were delighted to find that this restaurant was the genuine article: very friendly staff who were interested & chatty if you wanted to chat, unobtrusive if you didn't. We both had the spaghetti marinara (£14), which was delicious & full of fish. Other pasta dishes were cheaper. 500ml of a decent house white (£9.95), sambucas were £2.60. My wife's tiramisu was large but melted in the mouth. My fresh fruit salad was the best I have had. Both £5.50. I cannot recommend this place enough. Very Covid aware.

This is one of our favourite restaurants and the best Italian in Shrewsbury. It’s authenticity and freshly, home made food is delicious, with plenty of choice in the menu. The setting is yet again so authentically Italiano and they have created such a lovely dinning atmosphere.
The staff are helpful and friendly and can help you with food selection if needed. When you consider that all the food is freshly made the time to serve is very good.
I really can’t recommend this restaurant enough and can’t wait fir our next visit.

Luckily we managed to book a table at Osteria da Paolo before the lockdown. Upon arrival we received a really warm welcome and the staff were very friendly and very attentive. The starters were fantastic, the mains were amazing and the dessert finished the meal off perfectly, the service was really good on a very busy night and the whole meal was really good value, a real tasty treat before lockdown and can’t wait to come back, highly recommend.

Osteria da Paolo is a well-run independent Italian restaurant - a model of its kind, inexpensive, unpretentious but *good*. Our party of 12 all enjoyed dinner there on January 23rd, a quiet Thursday evening. Lots of different dishes were ordered, and everything was eaten up completely. I very much enjoyed my Fegatini (chicken's livers) starter, Chitarra di Mare (pasta with mussels and prawns in a tomatoey sauce) and good old Tiramisu. The house red was very drinkable too. Service was friendly, polite and attentive without being intrusive - just right.
Our group of friends has had an annual dinner at Paolo's for the past three years, and I hope that we will return for many years to come.

Decided to take our son and his wife to our favourite Italian restaurant this lunch-time, he has not been since it changed hands, where as we visit whenever we can find an excuse! As always, the food was excellent as was the service, nothing is too much trouble, the chef was happy to slightly adapt one of the mains to accommodate my daughter in-laws personnal taste, which ensured that she thoroughly enjoyed it. Sticking a candle in my son's dessert and singing happy birthday was an unexpected but delightful surprise. The quality of the food matched the welcome, ensuring four (five if you include the baby) happy customers leaving at the end of the meal. Only a matter of time, (and excuse) before we return, lovely experience, no more than we have come to expect.

We come to Shrewsbury from South Wales because we love the place, but we especially look forward to coming to Osteria Da Paolo for a meal. It is our favourite Italian restaurant!
The restaurant has a wonderful cosy atmosphere and the hostess Martha is amazing. The chef Alessandro is so very talented too. Martha looks after every single detail with great passion and a beaming smile and we feel right at home there. Always a candle lit at your table and you can relax, eat gorgeous food and enjoy the company. There is always a fantastic choice, with extra chef’s specials available. The house red wine is delicious and you are always offered a complimentary Limoncello at the end. We highly recommend this gorgeous & atmospheric place. It is alive with authentic Italian passion and love for what they do so well. We came 2 nights running this visit and we will be back in a couple of months for more rest, relaxation and pasta!
See you soon folks and thank you so much ❤️

My husband and I were in the area for the day on our anniversary and decided to give this place a go for our evening meal. The staff were lovely and so accommodating any changes you want to make to your meal is all welcomed as they make everything fresh to order! The food was great, personally I found there was too much cheese on the lasagne but the flavours were still great. The best thing though was the passion jammy dodger cheese cake! Absolutely AMAZING!
Thank you again to the staff for a lovely meal ☺️

A warm welcome when we arrived, lovely busy atmosphere with excellent service throughout.
The food was plentiful and perfectly cooked, never expected so many prawns on the delicious starter and savoury cheesecake was interesting!
Fish special main was gorgeous, hake, scallops cockles and mussels was spot on and chicken dish was tasty.
Portions were so generous no room for desert but they sounded very tempting! Wine was very quaffable.....ladies looking after us were all delightful, and congrats to the chef hes an artist.

Having had an extended break (due to Covid-19 issues) we happily returned to our favourite Italian restaurant to celebrate my Birthday, having been forced to cancel or anniversary meal some months earlier. The Restaurant is to be congratulated for effort it has made to make this a safe place to visit, without overtly affecting the wonderful welcoming environment. As always the greeting on arrival was both warm and sincere, the service was top draw, ( great to see an old and much missed staff member returning to the fold) nothing was to much trouble with a full and detailed explanation of the menu. We both started with the pigeon breast special, i's a particular favourite of mine and did not disappoint, it was cooked to perfection, I then had a new addition to the menu which was the pan fried duck breast with special (secret) spice rub whilst the wife plumped for the special Pork Belly. The chef nailed both mains, they were equally good (tried a bit of both), Tina finished all of hers, (no surprise there!) but the portion size slightly defeated me (all the duck went). We finished off with the Amaretto Torte, with accompanying candle, nice gesture which was fully appreciated and a Mango Sorbet for her indoors, all washed down with a very good bottle of Montepulciano. This restaurant is a little gem, which deserves our support during these extremely difficult times, the food, welcome and service are all top class, will be back again very soon, can't wait!

We visited Osteria Da Paolo for our work Xmas party. They staff were very accommodating and provided an excellent service. Considering there were 16 of us the food came at a good speed and everything was served at the same time. The food was absolutely fantastic, nobody had a bad word to say about it. The chef even came to personally thank us for choosing his restaurant as well which is a very nice touch to end a wonderful evening. We know where to go next year now!
