After visiting a Neolithic henge monument and largest megalithic stone circle in the world, the Red Lion was a great to relax and enjoy a nice meal with our dog. Good pub food.

Only two guys serving at the bar in a very busy pub - you also have to order food at the bar making it even slower. Toilet out of order - had to use disabled toilet ... not good. Starter arrived after a reasonable time...More

Unique pub day in the middle of a 6000year old stone circle. Quaint old village with surges of tourists.! Stay a breath for lunch / dinner. Got exactly what was ordered. No complaints.

We came for a meal the evening before setting off to walk The Ridgeway. We had a sharing platter and then the beef rib and a steak meal, all of which were excellently cooked and very tasty. Washed down by a couple of real ales...More

5 star Awful food in a 5 star beautiful building. I am ashamed that overseas visitors are offered such poor quality over priced food, not the best of British. The cheese and ham sandwich I had looked as if it was thrown together with supermarket...More

If you Love Avebury then you will come to love the welcome you receive in the Red Lion.... I am not quite sure whether it is the aura from the stones themselves or the effect it has on those that visit the place ....the food...More

I visited here with two friends while visiting the stone circle. We stopped here for coffee and then came back later and had lunch. The food was great and the 'lunch' prices were reasonable. I drank the 'Well Water'.

Excellent food . Friendly service. Big pub. Great location after seeing Avebury stones. Car park. Particularly enjoyed the traditional steak and ale pie. Don't see many proper full pies these days. Delicious desserts too.

Description
The Red Lion is set in the tiny village of Avebury which is three miles in radius and some 2000 years older than Stonehenge! Refurbished Winter 2013 the pub is 400 years old and located at the centre of the stone circle where every six weeks a pagan festival is held. It is in the Top Ten list of most haunted pubs in the country and has been seen on TV as such. The main ghost is that of an old landlady "Florrie" who was killed here by her husband. Ghosts aside, this destination food house is a lovely thatched listed cottage with cobbles and a large mill stone in the car park and low ceilings, beams and traditional wood furniture with a modern twist inside. Food is served from an extensive main menu and specials board, offering a good selection of quality pub fayre with a good range of wines available to complement the experience or a choice of real ales if preferred. The Wadworth brewery is only two miles away! Our clientele are generally tourists and visitors but there is a friendly welcome for anyway wishing to have a drink or dine.
