When we arrived in Oban after a long and tiring drive from the South, we booked into our accommodation then went exploring this pretty, impressive ferry and fishing port. Whilst checking out the ferry times and services we walked past this world-renowned seafood hut, just...alongside the ferry terminal. It was just closing up as we walked up, and I expressed my disappointment suggesting that we had been travelling for days just to sample their wares. To our astonishment and evident delight, as they were clearing and putting away, they insisted on cooking some succulent mussels in a broth of white wine, garlic and cream, then serving them steaming in huge tray with crusty bread to soak up the juices. The cost? £4.25! Well worth the long-haul from New Zealand, as the other satisfied punters will attest.More
Grand Seafood platter what a treat. Excellent value for money. No frills eating. Even on a very wet day the queues tell the story. A great way to meet other people from across the world. Quality variety and quantity.
A great place to visit to taste the delights of Oban. It's very popular and can be long queues so get there early. So much choice at very reasonable prices. We tried the oysters, mussels, crab sandwich an the platter . Superb and a must...visit.More
A hut on the ferry terminal with a view of the bay and the town.
Wooden seats and benches.
Dog friendly, sitting under the tables.
Leave your leftovers on the table, don't worry about the mess, but totally Covid-safe.
Listen to an Andy monologue while...he steams your mussels. You may not fully understand it but his mussels are out of this world.
Order the scallops. Definitely.
Relish that butter.
Listen carefully for your number.
Do not lose your ticket or a server in waterproofs and wellies will not hand over the most wonderful seafood from the waters in front of you.
If you're in Oban, there are no excuses. If you haven't been to Oban, the Seafood Hut is worth the visit alone.
But it is a hut.
On the ferry terminal.
We visited on a Wednesday in September with not many around, apparently queues are more common place.
And honestly didn't see a seagull and I've been to Whitby.More
Fresh seafood at reasonable orices. The platters are good with a wide selection of seafood, however, favourite dishes are the scallops (large chipmunks ones) and also the fresh mussels cooked to order.
Adjust your expectations - the clue is in the name 'a hut'. To see that some are 'complaining about the seagulls' suggests some Southern sensibilities.
Not everything represents a moment of glory - scallops aren't seared, and come without roe... probably a bit smaller.
However,...the Oysters are a revelation. Huge and scrumptious. Mussels were very good too.
I doubt the staff there read our Tripadvisor reviews... it's been the same business model for probably the last 30 years, and long may it continue.
Only SMALL thing would be to reduce on some of the single use plastic/ polystyrene waste where possible. Only oysters served on metal platter.
The men shucking oysters are faultlessly polite and friendly.More
