Visited on 19th may. Had bread to start - ok- had fish and chips and chicken supreme. Chips awful and fish over cooked and grey. Sauce in chicken had a floury taste. Both meals luke warm. Long wait between bread and mains. We did not complain at the time as we had a bus to catch. Have eaten there often... More

We visited Cafe Rouge for a late lunch midweek. It wasn't that busy, but service was poor, and some of the salad leaves were going very yellow and inedible. Haven't been to a Cafe Rouge before and won't be going again.

I have been to several of their restaurants in the past including this one and had good meals . However , this time I was disappointed. Starter was lovely , I had the mushrooms in a cream and garlic sauce , yummy ! On to my "well done" steak , which was certainly not well done but medium , I... More

Went here yesterday with a friend had a voucher sent to me as it was my birthday but seemingly they don't honour it in Scotland, only England !!! Next was the set lunch, starter was fine and the pudding was absolutely delicious but the main, well what can I say, it was a tart de prentemps with goats cheese, gruyere... More

Visited for breakfast last month and really enjoyed it, friendly staff a nice restaurant. Went back today for breakfast again and the staff seemed a little less friendly, perhaps more stressed from a busier restuarant. The food itself was pretty good and we enjoyed that, however the cleanliness needs to be looked at. When we got our breakfast the milk... More

Very nice waiting staff but the food wasnt worth the money & pretty average. Not great given the vast choice of eateries in Edinburgh so we will not be eating here again. The thing that struck me most was i didnt find this place very clean. Food on the floor, dirty glasses & its not as if the place was... More

While waiting for a shop to open, we stopped in for a coffee and a snack. The coffee and the pastry were delicious. I would give this place a higher rating if the server had a more pleasant attitude. It seemed like we were intruding on her day. She wasn't friendly and we were an inconvenience

We had to eat breakfast here as part of our stay at the " allegedly" 4 star Frederick House across the street. They never explained why. We also planned a dinner here thinking it would be convenient after a long day in the city. Day one they had oven problems and could only serve cold food. That scuppered dinner plans... More

Very friendly and welcoming staff. I originally went to avail myself of the facilities! The food is beautifully presented, quick, efficient and attentive service; great flavours and lovely cocktails.

The menu could do with an update, visited here with friends a few dishes not available of the menu, very overpriced for what you get, the positive is the staff, who are helpful and friendly.

Staying in New Town

Neighbourhood Profile
New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighbourhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.
