Upon reading some of the negative reviews I wonder if perhaps my wife and I visited a totally different Restaurant but no, it was indeed The City Restaurant in Edinburgh. Upon entering the establishment there was not a free table to be found but the very friendly and helpful head lady knew of a table that was about to become... More

This place is near the university and has good prices so I decided to try and have lunch there. I had already been once and had a nice breakfast so I thought it would be a good place. I had a filled omelette that came with chips. The omelette was alright, nothing remarkable, but the chips were horrible. The oil... More

We visited this restaurant last night on our way to the Festival Theatre (it is virtually next door). The theatre show was scheduled to start at 7.30 so we thought we would be able to get into the restaurant without any difficulty around 5ish. How wrong we were as almost all of the tables had been booked. It had not... More

I went to the city restaurant with some friends and I was impressed by everything! The décor inside was really warm and inviting and the staff were great too - they didn't have an issue with splitting the bill either for us which was great! They had a nice range of food and it was so good and big portions... More

It's been a long time since we last visited this restaurant and each time it's been great. This time we noted extremely, efficient, friendly and helpful staff. We opted for fish, chips and mushy peas. Good sized portions and cooked perfectly, especially the chips, something I don't eat often. We will not leave a return as long this time.

I took family here for tea after a theatre matinee. Welcomed at the door with a smile and shown to an upstairs window table. It's bright , clean and cheerful with good views over the city. The food was freshly cooked , tasty and good value. Gluten free batter available for fish and chips! Great service from pleasant and helpful... More

We live dangerously close to this wonderful place and have found it to be a consistently great take-away restaurant. The food is always delicious and the service is exceptional. You can also sit in to eat here, it has a light, friendly atmosphere with a pleasant dining room on two floors. We return here a little more often than we... More

Visited with (grown-up) family in December. We booked a table and so sat upstairs, by the window which has a good 'city scape' view. We ordered lots of different things to share from the menu like haggis wedges and deep fried white pudding - you must eat these at least once when you visit the city - at this restaurant... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
