First visit to Katie's - have never been able to get a table before. First impression is that the tiny restaurant area is a bit like somebody's slightly tatty front room: don't go expecting smart decor, and turn up in your comfy clothes, not your glad rags. However the place is warm and pleasant, the service is extremely friendly and... More

Went to Katie's for a birthday meal. All 3 courses were amazing. The ribeye steak was the best I had ever had. A lovely atmosphere. A quiet and intimate setting and a lovely welcome. Can't wait for my next birthday for a return visit.

My husband and I happened upon Katie's Diner recently. Unsure of eateries in Edinburgh we were immediately drawn into the cozy atmosphere that Katie's Diner offered. Homely, in the best sense and welcoming, on arrival our host was friendly and made us feel right at home. We didn't have much time to eat but once we ordered, we hadn't long... More

We booked here at last minute and I'm glad we did. The service was good and the steaks were all cooked to perfection. Although the decor wasn't modern, the restaurant was extremely well kept and I wouldn't let this put anyone off dining here. Highly recommended!!

Heard about this on Trip Advisor so gave it a go last night. On a bitterly cold night it was cosy with a warm welcome. We both had rib eye which cut like butter, needn't have had the steak knife. Tasty accompaniments. Then we had the apple crumble which was fab. Looked enviously at next door table with the pecan... More

A return visit often disappoints but not at Katie’s Diner ! Same high quality cooking (bravo Katie) and friendly service (keep up the banter Jeff !). Only change was trying BYOB this time - only £2 corkage very fair. The fillet steak was again done to perfection and the homemade custard and apple crumble was sublime. All in a homely,... More

We were lucky to get a table at this lovely restaurant that has only seven tables. The owners Jeoff and Katie were very friendly and welcoming. I ordered a burger that wasn't on the menu but they were happy to prepare it for me and it was excellent. The food is reasonably prices. Very recommended.

Like all the other reviewers have said the steaks are incredible. They are exceptionally well cooked and flavoursome. I had a rare fillet steak and it is one of the best I have had. What is disappointing is that for at least 2 years, reviewers have commented on the cheap frozen chips and the awful decor, which are still intact... More

Dined here with family on a Saturday evening. The owner met us at the door and was very friendly and welcoming. There were five of us and we shared three different starters which were all very tasty. For mains we all choose steak which was excellent! Although we were pretty full we could not resist the sticky toffee pudding so... More

I live locally and have been coming here on and off for the last 15 years, and I can honestly say that for my money, they do some of the best steaks in Edinburgh. After a fairly long absence, I visited again yesterday with friends and was wondering whether they would still be as good. I'm very pleased to say... More

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
