Perfect Sunday lunch celebrating my mum's 90th birthday in the private room a few weeks ago. From the moment we arrived we were greeted and looked after by the gorgeous Kerry. Nothing was too much trouble and she calmly looked after all 18 of us. The food, wine and service were all excellent. The private room is a good size... More

We had our retirement party at Howies last Friday. I booked online and found the system easy to use. I dealt with a few staff online all of whom I found to be very professional and all were able to answer my questions and put my mind to rest on a variety of practical issues. On the night itself we... More

As a table of 19 we hired the private room at Howie's Waterloo. Having been given 3 different stories as to what we would be charged I was apprehensive before our visit. The meal was delicious and good value for what is served- having the terrine, lamb and brownie pudding all were delicious! The private room was lovely however was... More

The food in this large restaurant is middle of the range scottish at a reasonable price. they do byo wine ( though not at weekends , though they kindly allowed this because we came in error with this). The service is good. BUT the room is big and if there is a hen party in then the noise levels are... More

Prices not hiked for our Mother's Day lunch. Well cooked, beautifully presented food, our waitress (Ange) was charming and knowledgeable. Very reasonable prices too, with a free glass of bubbly for the mums. A recent discovery for us - what a find!

Six of us had the lunch. Great service with good value for money food. Was nice and relaxing as no hurry to give back table. Everyone enjoyed the meal which was good as it was my choice. Definitely be back.

Four of us (two couples) came here for Sunday lunch before we headed off to Murrayfield Ice Rink to watch Edinburgh Capitals play Nottingham Panthers! Knowing we wouldn't be eating again that day we went for three courses! All our dishes were very nicely presented, plentiful and delicious. The staff were excellent. The interior nice and comfortable. Hope to be... More

Business dinner for 4 people. Great service and good menu selection. We all had steaks which were very nice. The restaurant was full yet the service was very good throughout the meal. Prices are reasonable and the location is very pleasant. Would recommend.

Food and service excellent. Love the BYOB lunch idea through the week. Price for a 3 course lunch in centre of Edinburgh just amazing. Have been several times with friends, most recently on 21st, never been disappointed and fully intend to be back soon. Would highly recommend.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
