Very nice inside and the staff lovely. We had lunch there and we had salmon as starters and then sausages and mash and the pie. Dry sausages and awful mash but we liked the beef pie and the ale.

Oodles of character in this well aged local delight. Great food and friendly staff make this an ideal stop for the well versed local or equally suitable for visitors to the city. Look out for some of Edinburgh greatest musical talents playing this venue.

Tasty first meal in Edinburgh. It is pretty centrally located but far enough from the tourist traps up the royal mile. There is bar only seating downstairs for drinks and food service upstairs. They serve local Edinburgh beers on tap with a selection of about four along with some bottles of other kinds. I had the fish and chips for... More

Stopped in for a refreshing drink after a lot of walking with my partner. Warm and friendly welcome from the barman. Had a couple of great pints of beer (Caledonian Edinburgh Castle) and enjoyed sitting in a relaxed, comfortable and cosy bar area. We didn't try the food but overheard people saying how good it was. Did see the portion... More

Stopped off here after a visit to the castle. Was very much in need of food at this point and was not disappointed. My husband and I both ordered the veggie burger with a pint, which I think was about £9.75. Portion was huge, double stacked burger with onion rings and massive portion of chips. The restaurant was busy when... More

Nice little pub for a quick drink. Sometimes go here with work colleagues for a quick drink - located at the bottom side of the royal mile so easily accessible.

Both the atmosphere and the food is amazing! The creepy past of the building adds to the experience and the food is to die for.

Popped in on Wednesday for some lunch. The barman was friendly and pre-warned us that there would be a wait for food. We followed his directions and headed up to the dining area. We didn't see any staff and headed towards a table; we hesitated before sitting down as we thought we should wait to see if it was ok... More

After showing my American friends around Edinburgh they choose the Tolbooth Tavern (somewhere I had never eaten before) as they like the historical look and wanted to try some 'pub grub'. I was pleasantly surprised by the Tolbooth Tavern, it was busy but had a lovely atmosphere, the staff were attentive and extremely friendly and the food was delicious. Service... More

Est 1820 Edinburgh's second oldest pub rests in the building built in 1590 that was once used as a Police cell, prison and courthouse, it has seen the imprisonment of the covenanters, daring escapes, and warlocks exorcised

Now a great pub, doing amazing Scottish food, from Haggis, (we breed our own) to traditional Fish and Chips.
All can be washed down with some of the Caledonian Brewery's famous ales, or a fine wee dram of malt whisky.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
