Really lovely staff and beautiful food, just what we were looking for a traditional Scottish menu! Highly recommend the vegetarian haggis and the beef... just gorgeous! Will definitely be back when I visit Edinburgh again.

What a spot. I've done the whisky tour upstairs which is terrific, but head downstairs to the restaurant and relax away from the maddening crowds. Their bartenders are whisky experts and you'll have - literally - hundreds of whiskies to choose from. Have a dram or two, grab a bite and relax. This is a GREAT place that always seems... More

We ate at the restaurant after taking the tour and tasting class. It was so good to then go on to have some food and choose your own whisky to go with your dinner. We had the two tasting boards between us and the food was lovely. Plenty to fill us up. The staff were very knowledgeable and great at... More

Superb food and great service. We will be back for dinner next time we are in Edinburgh. The two course lunch is especially good value.

My wife & I enjoyed a Scottish dinner as part of a Tattoo package through Glory Days. The dinner was a great sample of various Scottish fare, accompanied by local wine and a dram of whiskey. We were seated with 3 other couples (2 from Germany & 1 from Switzerland) which was a great experience and fun. After dinner we... More

Amber is a quite interesting experience. Take the Tour and dinner and you will not only follow a course on whisky (including tastes of 4 different ones) but also have very nice food in an excellent restaurant. The whisky collection (over 3.500 sealed bottles) has been sold lately for an undisclosed figure, and under the condition to stay in Scotland,... More

Visited Edinburgh for a few days and found this place, what a great move by us, it was busy without being over full or rushed, we sat at the bar and were served by a nice young and informative chap (Caleb), he gave us a directory menu of a vast selection of whisky, all on display behind the bar. we... We're only in Edinburgh for a couple of nights and wanted to try some authentic Scottish food before we left. We headed to Amber restaurant which is right next to Edinburgh Castle on The Royal Mile. Firstly, the ambiance is perfect. The restaurant is located downstairs and is warm and inviting with festive Christmas decorations. We didn't have reservations and... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
